Job Description

The Phlebotomy Team Lead assists in monitoring the activities of couriers and/or phlebotomists working throughout the laboratory in various inpatient and outpatient settings. This position can make appropriate decisions in the absences of the department manager. This position functions as a phlebotomist and performs venipuncture on inpatients and/or outpatients (pediatrics thru geriatrics) to obtain blood for laboratory tests according to laboratory department procedures. This position is cross trained in all disciplines he/she monitors. This role maintains high visibility by working side by side team members ensuring services promised are provided to all laboratory customers. The individual in this role will manage up with customer service issues, employee recognitions and disciplinary issues and is instrumental in the peer review hiring process for couriers and/or phlebotomists.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the activities of phlebotomists and couriers within the laboratory.
  • Rotates taking call after hours and weekends ensuring adequate coverage for services provided.
  • Helps Team Members when needed to ensure an orderly workflow.
  • Oversees the training of new team members and phlebotomy students.
  • Performs phlebotomy procedures according to established policies and procedures.
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
  • Organizes assigned work and ensures the workload is completed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Operates assigned equipment, performs any required maintenance and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
  • Readily accepts changes in assignment. Performs work level of equal skill and responsibility as needed. May also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility and may be required to do work of lesser responsibility when the workload of the department so requires.
  • Will act as a receptionist, greet patients, and answer phones in the lab.


Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required

Minimum Work Experience

  • 2 years phlebotomy experience Required

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to make good decisions.
  • Demonstrates the ability to achieve goals and be resourceful.
  • Must be able to work closely in a team as well as independently and is able to complete tasks in a timely manner.
