Loudoun County Department of Family Services seeks a dedicated, professional candidate for its Public Benefits Specialist II position. The successful candidate will join the Public Assistance and Support division and the diverse department that envisions better health, safety, and well-being for all. The Department supports individuals and families in the community to live their best lives while advocating for those most vulnerable and respecting their right to self-determination.


Job Summary

In this role, you will determine eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medical Assistance, and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) for new applications. Responsibilities also include conducting interviews with applicants, requesting appropriate documentation, and applying applicable federal and state policy. In addition, you will maintain a caseload of open SNAP, Medical Assistance and TANF cases and regularly evaluate ongoing eligibility. You will also act timely on reported changes and complete thorough case documentation.

The ideal candidate should have the following:

  • Knowledge of automated systems related to program area and job role.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques and practices of family, children, and adult public assistance programs.
  • Skill in conducting interviews to gather pertinent information related to the determination of eligibility for public assistance programs.
  • Knowledge of casework theory and practice.
  • Skill in providing appropriate and effective case management for those applying for or receiving public assistance programs.
  • Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with clients, co-workers, staff, other professionals, officials, and the public.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply policy appropriately in determining eligibility.
  • Ability to apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential situation in a professional and discrete manner
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree; three (3) years of directly related experience in a customer service or social/human services setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:
Bilingual in English and Spanish. Public Benefits policy knowledge and experience processing SNAP, Medical Assistance, and TANF applications and renewals.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

The position may be located at either our Leesburg or Sterling office. The successful candidate may be required to work at an alternate work site(s) to carry out duties that support the needs of the County.

The successful candidate may be required to perform work that involves crisis situations and make decisions involving people, resources, property. The successful candidate will undergo
pre-employment background checks which may include criminal, credit, Child Protective Services (CPS), and DMV checks and hold or obtain certifications required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. A valid driver's license and good driving record is required. Driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification.
