Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The PT Counselor, Disability Services specializes in counseling for career exploration, planning, and assistance with job search skills. Will also be responsible for academic counseling and possible advising. Primarily assists in Disability Services, serving students with qualifying conditions (i.e. disability and pregnancy issues), to provide them with reasonable classroom accommodations with a focus on retention efforts. Contributes to the educational environment of the college by educating students, staff and faculty on services available to students with qualifying conditions. Additionally, ensuring compliance with the policies, procedures and state/federal regulations for working with students with qualifying conditions within the Disability Services Department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides career, academic and personal counseling, as well as information and assessment services to support student learning, development and attainment of career goals for new and continuing students and community members.
  2. Conduct intake interviews, review assessments, and determine appropriate accommodations for students with qualifying conditions in accordance with state and federal regulations and LSC policy.
  3. Advises students with qualifying conditions on the application for acquiring accommodations, including determination of the documentation required under state and federal regulations.
  4. Develops and maintains professional relationships with students, colleagues and the community.
  5. Assist with resolving student and faculty conflicts regarding accommodations and determine appropriate course of action as needed.
  6. Serve as a liaison to faculty in the divisions to provide academic support to students with disabilities.
  7. Provides career related services for the retention of at-risk students including the socially and economically disadvantaged, the academically underprepared, nontraditional and returning students who are working with the Disability Services Office.
  8. Provide campus and community partner presentations related to Disability Services. Responsible for ensuring and maintaining compliance with local/state/federal processes and documentation within assigned area.
  9. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge in career, personal and/or retention counseling
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy of LSC

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in counseling or related field and at least 1 year of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience administering and interpreting career assessment instructions (paper-pencil and computerized)

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
