Departmental Overview:

Arts and Lectures (A&L) is a large, robust, complex, primarily self-supporting, non-academic unit that supports the academic mission of the university. A&L is the largest presenting organization between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and is one of the most visible, public-facing departments at UCSB. Through more than 150 events annually, A&L partners with faculty and academic departments, community organizations and leaders, university administrators, philanthropists and funders to create opportunities that integrate with and complement university curricula and create community connections.

Brief Summary of Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Education and Community Engagement, the Arnhold Education Associate advances Arts & Lectures Education and Outreach unit in their mission to, 'Educate, Entertain, Inspire.' Researches, creates, develops, plans and implements program activities associated with reaching, serving, and engaging key constituencies across campus, in schools, and in the community, as well as establishing and developing relationships with educators and community leaders. Constituencies may include students, faculty/educators, and staff, University alumni; local community members; K-12 schools; non-profits; and the public.

The Arnhold Education Associate works independently alongside Arts & Lectures staff in programming, production, marketing, development, and finance to achieve a high-quality program and through accountability. The Arnhold Education Associate developments and implementations educational residencies and core components of the education and community programs while considering the needs and priorities of campus and community constituents; creates, enhances, and sustains relationships across campus and in the
community; mentors student staff, staffs select Education events; and collects and manages departmental data related to assigned projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree In related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including tact and political acumen to effectively represent the institution.
  • Skill to meet prescribed deadlines, manage projects, and plan events.
  • Ability to work some evening and weekends.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of experience with building and maintaining effective relationships with diverse constituencies across a community.
  • 4-6 years of experience working with K-12 and/or university-level student populations.

  • Driver's License (U08): Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Responsibilities:

Education Production and Management (50%)--Develops and implements programs and strategies that support the Arts & Lectures education program, which serves over 30,000 students and families each year across campus and in the community. Overall duties include mentoring student staff, interacting with artists and artist management in implementation of all education and community engagement activities, including developing artist residency schedules; planning and managing residency logistics; planning with local vendors or venue staff to ensure that technical needs are met; researching and providing context materials as required; escorting and hosting artists on the day of the event, including artist transport in university-owned or personal vehicle, leading events as the representative of the organization and the University, ensuring well-being and overall positive experience for artists in residency; and completing follow-up communication with partners and constituents. The sessions range from in-school assemblies with TK-12 students, workshops with community members and students, free public performances, and artist/speaker visits to campus to interface with students, faculty, staff, and/or alumni. Deepens the Education and Community Engagement department program's impact across campus and with local community groups. Duties related to this program include interfacing with faculty, staff, and local administrators to design, produce, and implement educational sessions; maintaining relationships and communications with faculty, staff, and local administrators; directing and mentoring other A&L support staff in their event duties, as needed.

Program Planning and Promotions (30%)--Collaborates with the Director of Education and Community Engagement to strategize annual programs according to the unique artists' abilities and availability, University and local needs and interests, foundation and donor objectives, financial requirements, and program priorities. This includes
researching and providing insight into partnerships, prospective programming and other areas that might inform program planning. Collaborates with the Director of Education and Community Engagement to identify opportunities to develop awareness of and engagement in Arts & Lectures programs across campus and in the community. Tracks and
informs the Director of issues of community interest or need and recommends possible programming. Independently reviews website content to keep information updated and relevant. Prepares written and visual materials and/or collateral to engage students, faculty/educators, staff, alumni, and/or community members with educational programming.

Data Management and Analysis (20%)-- The Arnhold Education Associate is independently responsible for maintaining select education and community databases and assets and
assisting with financial reporting. Supports the Director of Education and Community Engagement to extract key data points to inform strategic plans and analyze, evaluate, and report on the program. Assists with the tracking and monitoring of expenses related to selected education and community programming. May research various topics and gather relevant data to inform programming and strategic plans, keeping management informed as necessary and providing input as required.
