About the Job

The participant will be involved in molecular genetics, physiology, and breeding that will encompass turfgrass responses to light, flowering requirements/cues, and sod forming abilities along with leading general turfgrass management and seed production research.

Position Responsibilities:

60% Research - Design, execute, and analyze data for experiments evaluating vernalization requirements in different turfgrass species such as perennial ryegrass and hard fescue. Investigate the molecular regulation of vegetative-reproductive phase transitions, vernalization, and other floral development pathways in cool-season turfgrasses, with emphasis on the role of light quality on flowering. Design, execute, and analyze data for experiments aimed at discovering genetic traits associated with tolerance to foliar-shade including carbon allocation in different turfgrass species. Design, execute, and analyze data for turfgrass seed production and general turfgrass management field experiments including research related to sod production.

30% Writing - Lead in planning, preparing, and writing both publications and grants. Including peer-review publications and writing for public-facing websites and/or magazines. Develop and write grants for federal, state, and private organizations including but not limited to budgeting, experiment planning, and grant writing.

10% - Mentoring, Supervision, and Professional Development - Provide mentoring support to graduate students through consultation and review of their research. Participate in professional development activities such being actively involved in professional organizations such as ASA-CSSA-SSSA, ASPB, or ASHS. Assist lab members with fieldwork, analysis, and developing professional skills. Mentor and supervise undergraduate students. Develop collaborations with staff, students, and faculty in CFANS or the broader University of Minnesota community.

Required Qualifications: PhD in plant science, horticulture, agronomy, or a related field

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $61,008 - $62,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience
