Senior Vice-President, Global Asset Liability Management

Summary

The Senior Vice-President, Global Asset Liability Management champions innovative strategies that optimize asset and liability risk management across Sun Life's global organization, ultimately supporting our purpose of helping Clients achieve lifetime financial security and live healthier lives.

This role works closely with Business Groups, Investments, Finance, Actuarial and Risk teams to develop and implement ALM practices that meaningfully contribute to our enterprise-wide strategy and financial objectives. The SVP provides clear and coherent messaging for the Executive Team, the Board of Directors and regulators reinforcing Sun Life's commitment to financial strength and stability. Through asset-liability management best practices, this role helps Sun Life navigate market volatility and economic uncertainties, ensuring we remain resilient and well-positioned to meet Client needs both now and in the future.

As a member of the Risk, Actuarial and ALM Leadership Team, the SVP Global Asset Liability Management is expected to contribute and add value to a wide range of wide strategic discussions. This role will act as a dynamic change agent within the global actuarial and investment community and extends this influence more broadly as our business and the external market continue to evolve.

Accountability Overview:

Leadership and Vision

Shapes long-term ALM strategies to optimize Client and shareholder value by:

  • Providing leadership, direction, and vision for the company's ALM framework and key processes that align with Sun Life's overall enterprise strategy to deliver on our purpose.
  • Communicating and gaining commitment to strategic priorities that integrate business strategies and financial goals with the organization's risk appetite and constraints.
  • Driving the evolution of global ALM teams and processes by promoting innovation, diverse perspectives, and forward-thinking approaches to manage ALM risks.
  • Integrating deep ALM expertise and broad business acumen to advise business leaders on optimizing portfolio results and generating returns commensurate with risks.
  • Displaying executive presence and communicating with credibility to our Executive Team, Board, regulators, and peers on ALM-related matters.

Asset Liability Management

Oversees enterprise-wide ALM framework by:

  • Providing strategic direction in line with corporate strategy, external environment, and professional developments in ALM practices.
  • Establishing and maintaining the ALM framework for governance and controls, including policies, standards, and guidelines, while balancing the need for speed in decision-making and execution excellence.
  • Working with Business Groups to ensure ALM processes, frameworks, and resources are best in class regarding quality, accuracy, and value-added deliverables.
  • Monitoring and assessing the impact of emerging market risks (equity, interest, credit, currency, real estate, liquidity) and developing strategies to manage these risks within established limits.
  • Working with Business Groups and product development leaders to assess and mitigate investment and market risks for new product and pricing initiatives, ensuring alignment with established limits and compliance standards.
  • Fulfilling duties related to ALM support for investment and asset methods, assumptions, and models used for quarter-end financial reporting, ensuring consistency and compliance with actuarial standards.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

  • Possess deep expertise in actuarial reserving methodologies and financial drivers, with the ability to leverage this knowledge to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of investment instruments and markets, applying this insight to optimize asset-liability management across the enterprise.
  • Maintain a thorough grasp of evolving accounting standards including International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS 17, IFRS 9) and tax regulations, proactively adapting strategies to ensure compliance and maximize financial outcomes.
  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative approaches to regulatory capital requirements, staying ahead of industry trends.
  • Excel in building and nurturing relationships, leveraging interpersonal skills to influence senior executives, drive consensus and foster cross-functional collaboration.
  • Cultivate a culture of innovation, encouraging calculated risk-taking and challenging the status quo to drive positive change within the actuarial function and beyond.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
