Job Description:

The Compliance Counsel is responsible for ensuring the firm's policies and procedures comply with legal requirements that govern firm activities, including data privacy, information security, sanctions, and anti-corruption laws. They must also ensure that all personnel adhere to these policies and operate in accordance with them. The Compliance Counsel also provides legal guidance to functional area leaders on operational matters and ensures that outside counsel guidelines and vendor contracts align with the firm's legal, compliance, and operational needs. Additionally, the Compliance Counsel manages the firm's privacy and third-party risk management programs and oversees responses to client compliance audits. An onsite work arrangement is preferred for this position.

Reporting relationships:

This position reports to the firm's General Counsel

This position directly supervises the Contracts Attorney.

  • Identify legal compliance risks and develop strategies to mitigate them while supporting the company's business objectives.
  • Collaborate with functional areas to:
    • Coordinate the development, management and maintenance of firm policies and procedures that comply with Federal and State laws and regulations, rules of professional responsibility, client requirements/outside counsel guidelines, and vendor contracts.
    • Develop and coordinate regular training plans/programs to ensure compliance and build awareness among all firm personnel regarding policies and procedures.
  • Work with IT to implement, maintain, and manage information security policies.
  • Provide legal support to departments such as Finance, Procurement, HR, IT, and Marketing.
  • Ensure that nonstandard client engagement terms, e.g., outside counsel guidelines, and vendor agreements are consistent with the firm's legal and operational requirements.
  • Support business development by ensuring RFPs and proposals meet legal and operational standards.
  • Direct the firm's responses to client inquiries/audits relating to data protection, security, sanctions, anti-corruption and other compliance subjects.
  • Investigate and coordinate the firm's response to incidents or complaints regarding privacy, information security, fraud, or other compliance matters.
  • Stay current on industry best practices and relevant compliance standards for law firms.

Job Requirements:
  • Law degree and active membership in good standing of a state bar required.
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience working in a law firm or corporate legal/compliance department.
  • At least five (5) years' experience managing a corporate or law firm data privacy program.
  • Deep understanding of US and international data privacy laws, e.g., HIPAA, GDPR.
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations relating to trade sanctions, money laundering, and anti-corruption.
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong ownership of the role and independent thinking.
  • Deep knowledge of laws and regulations affecting law firm operations, including data privacy, information security, trade sanctions, and anti-corruption.
  • Ability to draft clear policies and guidance on compliance matters.
  • Proven organizational and project management skills in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with senior attorneys and firm management on compliance issues and to demonstrate clear ownership and leadership in developing and implementing solutions.
  • Strong collaboration skills, including the ability to effectively interact with senior firm management.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Rochester, NY: $178,500 to $275,000
  • Boston, MA: $196,500 to $302,500
  • Chicago, IL: $196,500 to $302,500
  • Los Angeles, CA: $196,500 to $302,500
  • Washington, DC: $196,500 to $302,500
  • New York, NY: $216,000 to $332,750
  • San Francisco, CA: $216,000 to $332,750

In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications. Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range(s) are Nixon Peabody's good faith estimate of the annual salary(ies) it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
