About the Job

Summary:
A research scientist is sought to join the Veglia lab at the University of Minnesota's Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics. The laboratory primarily focuses on structural biology of proteins involved in cell signaling. To accomplish this, the research team employs a variety of approaches within molecular biophysics, with an emphasis on NMR spectroscopy. The researcher will be responsible for conducting large-scale protein production, including cloning, mutagenesis, and protein purification. Additionally, the researcher will perform biochemical assays. The researcher will maintain clear and thorough records of scientific work and undertake basic lab maintenance tasks, such as managing and ordering lab supplies. Furthermore, the researcher will participate in weekly laboratory meetings to discuss ongoing research with the team.

Essential Functions:
60% Recombinant Protein Expression and Purification
Protein expression in E. coli bacteria.
Protein purification using affinity tags.
Protein purification using chromatography systems.

30% Protein biochemical and biophysical assays
Protein binding assays, protein thermal stability, and protein-protein interaction characterization.

10% General Laboratory Maintenance
Inventory and organize laboratory materials, maintain general working order of laboratory,
Assist in ordering materials for laboratory work.

Qualifications

Required Functions:
BS or MS in Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, or related field, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years. Ability to carry out research protocols from written or oral instructions by supervisor. Ability to troubleshoot work effort is a key qualification.

Preferred Qualifications:
Molecular Biology (Cloning and PCR techniques), Cell culture, or Protein expression and purification experience or course training in related areas. 1 year laboratory experience required.

BMBB:

The department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics is committed to understanding the molecular mechanisms of metabolic diseases and cancer; developing novel strategies in biocatalysis and biotechnology; and advancing knowledge through structural biology and molecular biophysics. We organize ourselves into research divisions with emphases on Chemical and Structural Biology, Metabolic and Systems Biology, Molecular Biology and Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology. We are housed in new buildings with state-of-the-art research and support facilities.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $50,000 - $52,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
