Job Description:

Responsibilities

The Hourly Research Scientist will work within the Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment, Center for Environmental Health. The incumbent will join a team of public health professionals to help advance several priority projects related to characterizing human exposures, as well as health risks and benefits, related to consuming fish contaminated by harmful substances. The incumbent will conduct literature reviews, analyze data and develop detailed and extensive summary reports related to fish contaminant concentration data collected in New York State, the Great Lake states, and elsewhere. This work will focus most specifically on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in fish and the health benefits of fish consumption. In addition, the incumbent will interact with members of the Bureau, Division, and Center as well as outside researchers as needed for the successful completion of this work.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in environmental engineering, public health or a related field. At least five years of research experience in environmental public health.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience completing public health-related scientific and risk assessment projects. Knowledge and experience setting state fish consumption advisories with respect to mercury, PCBs and other relevant fish contaminants, substantial knowledge of PFAS toxicity and risk assessment, and working knowledge of PFAS data for freshwater fish. Understanding of cardiovascular and developmental benefits of fish consumption. Demonstrated working knowledge of New York State waters as well as familiarity with Great Lakes states fish advisory programs.

Conditions of Employment

Hourly, grant funded position expected to last until 9/30/2025. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

This hourly, part time position will be remote, working approximately 10 hours/week. The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance to Albany or Menands, NY and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.
