The Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) division has one (1) vacancy for either an Engineer or Associate Engineer-Wastewater Process Engineer (depending on qualifications) in the Support Services-Process Engineering, Research and Development, and Air Quality unit.

How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

The Engineer or Associate Engineer (Process) applies academic engineering knowledge with acquired practical experience in monitoring, optimizing, and troubleshooting processes and technical systems operated by MCES. The Engineer or Associate Engineer also may accomplish bench, pilot, and/or full-scale testing to support those objectives and may accomplish tasks related to regulatory reporting. The hard-working individual we need for our team will accomplish wastewater and treatment process engineering.


What you would do in this job

  • Makes significant contributions to the development and expanded application of advanced methods of data analysis to our wastewater systems.
  • Assist in the evaluation of system status by reviewing relevant data and having discussions with operations staff to confirm operational objectives are being met.
  • Assist in the identification, pursuit, and implementation of process optimization.
  • Assist in the generation of regulatory compliance documents.
  • Complete directed tasks on complex studies of process systems to identify and evaluate responses to changing conditions or requirements to troubleshoot issues and achieve greater levels of system performance and optimization.
  • Assist in the coordination of activities of various departments in a process system or area of responsibility so operational and regulatory requirements are achieved.
  • Assist with solids processes including incineration, dewatering, and air regulatory technical tasks.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Minimum Qualifications for Associate Engineer /(AFSCME, GRADE F)

Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or in a directly related area of discipline AND Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of hire. *Note: The FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam
  • Valid driver's license

Minimum Qualifications for Engineer / (AFSCME, GRADE, G)
Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or in a directly related area of discipline AND At least two (2) years of related engineering experience AND Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of hire. Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT)
  • Valid driver's license

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

  • Experience with and knowledge of wastewater treatment systems and process engineering.
  • Advanced degree with emphasis that addresses relevant areas of experience and knowledge.
  • Experience with and knowledge of advanced data analysis methods and tools with emphasis on their application to wastewater data.
  • Ability to read, and understand complex academic and technical papers.
  • Experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive environments.

What knowledge, skills, and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

  • Knowledge of process and wastewater treatment concepts.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and their application.
  • Knowledge of related regulations and rules applying to the area of work.
  • Professional judgment and the ability to apply independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and critera.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical problems involving large sets of data.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical information.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present technical information.
  • Ability to clearly summarize and present key findings, convey results, and thereby foster momentum support for process improvements.
  • Skill in human relations to influence, instruct, and negotiate with individuals to gain their understanding, cooperation, and action.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office applications.

Full Salary Range: $35.37 - $57.41 hourly / $73,570- $119,413 annually

Full Salary Range: $38.26 - $62.05 hourly / $79,581 - $129,064 annually
