Position Description

The Department of Hospitality and Retail Management in the College of Health and Human Science at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, Assistant Professor of Practice to begin September 1, 2025). The Assistant Professor of Practice will teach in the Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management program with a focus on undergraduate restaurant operations courses. The professor of practice will serve as the General Manager overseeing the staff and working with the Executive Chef to coordinate student-learning experiences at the department's functioning restaurant lab, Skyviews. The professor of practice will also work with the department on new revenue producing and experiential learning activities at Skyviews. The professor of practice will work with department administration to meet budget and revenue objectives. The Assistant Professor of Practice will not be expected to perform research but to assist with any research that is being conducted at Skyviews.

About the Department/School/Area

Hospitality & Retail Management is one of eight departments in the College of Health and Human Sciences. Over 400 students study in the Restaurant, Hotel, & Institutional Management and Retail Management programs.

Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

As a faculty member in the Department of Hospitality and Retail Management in the College of Health and Human Science at Texas Tech University you will be expected to:

  • Teach undergraduate students in a classroom setting the operational aspects of managing a restaurant, hospitality aspects of working with guests, and the management goals for front and back of the house.
  • Mentor students in the restaurant Skyviews on implementing management operations, customer service, and front and back of the house management
  • Mentor students along with the Executive Chef on menu creation and design
  • Work with the community on events and promotion of the restaurant
  • Work with the executive chef on catering and events
  • Work with the Department administration on executing plans for the restaurant and on achieving budget goals.

Faculty Qualifications


  1. A bachelor's degree in hospitality management or closely related field;
  2. Restaurant and/or institutional food service management experience;
  3. Experience with catering and special events;
  4. Demonstrated teaching experience, either in a classroom or through demonstrated employee training;
  5. Demonstrated mentorship and/or training on customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  1. A master's degree in hospitality management or closely related field.
  2. Significant restaurant industry experience in both the front and back of the house management.
  3. Demonstrated teaching experience, particularly in a culinary laboratory/restaurant.
  4. Experience with community outreach.
