Position Description

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month assistant professor of practice position to begin September 1st, 2025. This position is eligible for continuing appointment and will only teach online classes. It can be performed from anywhere in the United States. Full-time for this position is eight classes per academic year. Please note that this person will teach on an eight-week semester, so a typical load may look like 2-2-2-2.

The College of Arts & Sciences (CA&S) both represented original academic areas when TTU opened in 1925. The CA&S is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. About the Department/School/Area

The Sociology Program in the Department of SASW has 13 full-time faculty members as well as instructors, lecturers, and affiliated faculty. As one of the largest and fastest-growing undergraduate programs on campus, we offer bachelor's degrees in sociology and criminology in addition to a master's degree in sociology. We also have an innovative accelerated bachelor's to master's degree program that allows selected students to earn graduate credit while an undergraduate. Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

As a faculty member in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, you will be expected to:

  • Contribute to the teaching mission of the department in the realm of online education
  • Provide appropriate service to the department, college, and university

Faculty Qualifications


  • Ph.D. in Sociology or a highly related field from an appropriately regionally or nationally accredited university upon time of appointment. If clarification is needed, please email the search chair.
  • A record of consistent effort in i) teaching excellence and/or ii) improving pedagogical skills in one or more of the following: Introduction to Sociology, sociological theory, research methods, social statistics, criminological theory, law and policing, or other criminological electives. Experience as a doctoral student may fulfill this criterion.
  • A record of teaching online classes, either via synchronous or asynchronous means. Please be clear in your application about your history of teaching online classes, including modality, type of student, and size of classes.
