Mechanical Engineering VCS construction at NewPort News Shipyard
Overview Engineering position located at Newport News, Virginia in the Engineering Liaison Office in the Mechanical Engineering group. In this position the candidate will be required to provide technical resolutions for a variety of complex construction issues for VIRGINIA Class Submarines at the Newport News Shipyard (NNS). The job will require occasional shipboard investigation/evaluation on units and modules under various stages of construction. Candidate will be responsible for adjudicating construction and vendor issues for a wide variety of mechanical deviations. The majority of work will be centered on troubleshooting manufacturing mistakes during construction, fixing design deficiencies, and evaluating material discrepancies. The position also requires the occasional adjudication of structural issues as needed. Candidate must develop timely engineering resolutions in consideration of an aggressive construction schedule and manage multiple tasks concurrently. Candidate will occasionally be required to develop calculations to support construction resolutions; however, this position is not analysis focused. All mechanical submarine systems are handled including, but not limited to: Bearings and shafts, gears, hatches and doors, hydraulic systems, internal and external mechanical systems, large valves, linkages, pumps, remote mechanical operators, and weapons systems. The chosen engineer will interface with NNS Trades, construction foremen, program office, management, and Supervisor of Shipbuilding. Interacting and collaborating with design counterparts, working with EB engineering, materials, planning, welding, shock, and analysis departments will also be required. Time flexibility is required as the workload can require occasional extended hours and weekends. Qualifications Required:
Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Marine or Mechanical Engineering
