The computer science intern works with the MGB Health Care at Home Research and Development team to provide analytical support for research and development activities across a broad array of projects. The MGB Health Care at Home team focuses on delivering innovative high-value care in patient homes through teams of clinicians, novel technology, and innovative workflows.
We seek a computer science intern interested in learning and applying advanced biostatistical methods, machine learning, clinical research principles, and medical informatics. Applicants should have completed coursework and projects in several of these areas, with a particular preference for machine learning modeling on raw physiologic data. The ideal applicant should have a strong programming background (e.g., Python, R, SQL, SAS, Julia, Spark, and/or STATA) and the drive and enthusiasm to learn about clinical care by assisting in state-of-the-art patient-centered research.

Reporting to Dr Henry Ssemaganda, Data Scientist at MGB Health Care at Home, the computer science intern will learn and work across all phases of research projects, including extraction and organization of clinical and other data from a variety of information systems, automated data cleaning and verification, design, administration and construction of databases, analysis using valid statistical approaches, and development of new informatics and clinical tools. These studies will produce generalizable, publishable findings. Specifically, the computer science intern will work with a team of investigators, clinical research coordinators, and Scientists on various clinical studies and quality improvement projects.The computer science intern will help the team to translate research questions into analytic plans, analyze clinical data, conduct valid statistical tests and models, assist with data visualization, and communicate findings in presentations and manuscripts.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Data Scientist will be working directly under the supervision of Dr. Ssemaganda on various data-focused tasks:

  • Collaborate with Investigators, Clinical Research Coordinators, and Scientists of various clinical studies and quality improvement projects.
  • Extract data from a variety of clinical and other information systems.
  • Choose appropriate statistical methods for analyzing datasets.
  • Perform analyses using an appropriate language such as Python, R, SQL, SAS, and/or STATA.
  • Design, construct, and manage databases to store and organize large datasets.
  • Implement study-specific procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and internal best practices.
  • Conduct data analysis using a range of statistical methods and a variety of tools.
  • Establish data quality and validation processes. Perform QA and develop system documentation.
  • Develop informatics and clinical tools.
  • Communicate findings through presentations and preparation of manuscripts.
  • Participate in meetings to review and discuss analytic methodologies and results.
  • Build automation via APIs using NodeJS or similar frameworks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

The ideal candidate will have experience with college-level statistics courses, with demonstrated strong analytic ability. This position requires attention to detail, especially ensuring data security, quality, and accuracy. The ability to work simultaneously on various tasks, to maintain attention to detail, and to effectively contribute to the project team is essential.

  • Extensive data extraction and manipulation skills and familiarity with a variety of data types and formats, including JSON, XML Avro, Parquet and flat files, and experience cleaning and sampling data to produce useful, analyzable data sets
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of SAS, STATA, R, Python, or similar programming languages.
  • High level of attention to detail to ensure data security, quality, and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of biomedical informatics standards, including data interoperability standards.
  • Ability to generate visualizations using tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, ggplot or Plotly.
  • Knowledge of common healthcare codesets such as ICD, CPT, NDC, SNOMED, RxNORM etc.
  • Strong analytic and computer skills with extensive knowledge of database management
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to interpret acceptability of data results.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

EDUCATION:

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics or related field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 1+ years of hands-on experience working with complex data, developing and managing databases, data collection and conducting descriptive and other statistical analyses.
  • Experience with a range of biostatistical and preferably machine learning methods.
