Summary
Reporting to the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis, the Cost Accountant leverages strong cost accounting and functional business partnering expertise to drive financial accuracy and operational efficiency. This role involves developing and maintaining precise cost accounting systems, preparing and analyzing standard costs, and providing insightful financial analysis to the Operations team. The Cost Accountant supports strategic decision-making on initiatives to optimize manufacturing profitability, contributes to month-end close processes, and acts as a key business partner to support Stumptown's growth. This is a full-time, exempt position requiring strong analytical skills and a focus on process improvement.
Essential Functions
Cost Accounting:
Partner with Green Coffee, Operations, Product, Finance and other cross functional teams to develop and maintain accurate standard costs across all product categories and items. Perform cost reconciliations and inventory valuations, maintaining the integrity of our financial records. Prepare and analyze COGS reporting; provide clear insights into trends and identify opportunities. Analyze and explain variances between actuals and standard costs, with a focus on optimizing performance. Contribute to the ongoing improvement of our cost accounting methodologies and systems.
Supply Chain Business Partnering:
Work closely with the Operations and Green Coffee teams to identify and evaluate efficiency opportunities, reduce waste, help drive cost reduction, and supporting expansion projects. Conduct thorough financial analyses of our manufacturing processes and product lines; provide valuable insights to our operational partners to support management decision-making. Monitor inventory levels, turnover, and potential obsolescence, with a goal to maintain optimal on hand quantities. Partner with the team to evaluate capital investments, ensuring strategic alignment and targeted payback.
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
Ensure the timely and accurate completion of month-end inventory and supply chain accounting, with a focus on clear explanations of variances. Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts, emphasizing accuracy, transparency, and insightful analytics. Calculate and analyze inventory reserves helping to manage risk effectively. Support the annual audit process by providing necessary documentation and analysis.
Process Improvement:
Create and implement processes and procedures to enhance efficiency and strengthen internal controls. Support the Accounting team in reconciling balance sheet accounts related to inventory and fixed assets, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Maintain a high level of accuracy and integrity; Documents and maintains policies and procedures. Performs special projects, ad-hoc reporting, and other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Qualifications
Three to five years of experience in manufacturing cost accounting and experience with standard costing required. Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CMA, CPA or CCA preferred. Solid understanding of financial modeling and accounting concepts required. Extensive experience working with large amounts of data and a variety of ERP and business intelligence tools; D365 and PowerBI experience preferred. Intermediate or Advanced Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint required. Outlook, Teams and Sharepoint preferred, experience in Google Suite a plus. Strong communication skills, with ability to adapt the message depending on the audience. Self-starter with the ability to work independently to tackle challenges & find opportunities. Ability to consistently hit key dates and timelines while balancing multiple priorities. Experience in the Consumer Products, Manufacturing and/or Retail industries preferred. Flexible and adaptable to change.

Work Environment
Work takes place in office settings; this position is based at our HQ in Portland, Oregon and will spend, on average, 80% of their time working in the office and 20% of their time working from home. Ability to work additional hours as necessary during peak times (e.g. month-end close, etc) and occasionally on an ad-hoc basis depending on business needs.
