Rail Engineer - Entry to Junior Level

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Rail Engineer to join our Atlanta office. As part of the Rail Group, the Rail Engineer assists the planning, design and plan production for rail and general civil engineering on a wide variety of projects which may include site civil design, rough & precise grading, dredging, drainage design, utility design (sewer, water, & storm drain).

Duties and responsibilities:

• Assist and supports designs construction projects by studying project concept, architectural drawings, and models
• Assist the preparation of engineering design by collecting and studying reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photographs, and tests on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and related topographical and geologic data
• Produces rail design project tasks including geometric design, civil and drainage design
• Collects field data, documenting and reporting field conditions and findings
• Produces 2D concept plans and schematics and confidently communicates rail design options to the project team
• Produces 3D rail designs using Civil3D or OpenRail to verify project requirements are met and project is viable
• Supports the analysis of project costs by calculating labor, material, and related costs
• Creates feasibility study by analyzing engineering design, reviewing environmental impact studies, and assembling data
• Assist in the production of engineering documents by developing construction specifications, plans, and schedules
• Confirms adherence to construction specifications and safety standards by monitoring project progress and verifying calculations and placements
• Researches and assists in complying with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and advising management on needed actions

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required, Master's degree preferred
• 1-2 years of experience as a civil engineer, preferably with experience in rail design, site layout, stormwater, erosion control, utilities, and other infrastructure systems
• EIT Certification preferred
• AutoCAD/Civil 3D or MicroStation/OpenRail proficiency
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation)
• Availability and willingness to travel
• All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Working conditions:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
