Job Summary:

The PGY1 Pharmacy Resident will complete a 12-month training program designed to strengthen the Resident's clinical, communication, and management skills in preparation for a continued career in hospital pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, or pharmacy management. Our focus is on transitioning Residents from students of pharmacy to experienced pharmacists who provide exceptional patient care in an ever-changing profession. Under the general direction and guidance of the Residency Program Director (RPD) and assigned residency program preceptors, the Resident will perform a variety of clinical pharmacist duties.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care through disease state management, consultation with other health care providers and preceptors, and communication with patients.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and optimizes patient care.
  • Participates in required, elective, and longitudinal learning experiences under guidance from credentialed pharmacist preceptors and the RPD.
  • Satisfactorily meets goals and objectives associated with each learning experience.
  • Completes all residency program requirements and projects including medication use evaluations (MUEs), presentations, and publications under the direction of the Residency Program Director.
  • Provides leadership and acts as an educator within the pharmacy department and within the organization.
  • Represents the Pharmacy Residency Program on appropriate committees of the pharmacy department and within the organization.
  • Represents the Pharmacy Residency Program at state and national meetings.
  • Meets all ASHP Accreditation Standard requirements set forth for Residents.
  • Abides by all state and federal laws and regulations related to the practice of pharmacy.
  • Participates in medication safety, drug policy, and performance improvement activities.
  • Precepts and co-precepts pharmacy students.
  • Aids in the enhancement of the residency program for future residents.
  • Performs routine duties and activities of a fully trained, licensed pharmacist.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) (must be obtained by start date) required.
  • License as a pharmacist in the state of Virginia (must be obtained by 90 days after start date) required.
