Job Description Summary:

The Bioengineering Division is seeking a Senior scientist to support the research and development of cutting-edge technologies. At Draper Bioengineering, we work at the interface between engineering and biology, and the successful applicant will join teams working on Microphysiological systems (organ-on-chip) and other novel systems which blend complex biology with custom hardware and software. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, observant, collaborative, and dedicated, and will serve as a subject matter expert, applying their foundational immunology knowledge and experience to exciting, interdisciplinary efforts.

Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities
* Independently drive solutions to complex problems.
* Develop requirements for innovative bioengineering solutions, propose ways forward when customer requirements are unclear or incomplete, and adapt appropriately to changes in requirements.
* Subject Matter Expert (SME) able to perform advanced research and analysis for complex bioengineering solutions.
* Develop, document, and teach best practices to less experienced bioengineers; Demonstrate strong organization, planning, and time management skills to achieve goals.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Requires either a Bachelor's Degree in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics or related fields. Master's degree preferred.

Experience
Requires 5-7 years of Bioengineering or related engineering experience.

Additional Job Description:

Additional duties/responsibilities:

  • Serve as an cell biologist and/or tissue engineer subject matter expert for interdisciplinary teams including biologists, engineers, chemists, bioinformaticians, etc.
  • Lead and support technical research projects, including developing the research approach and coordinating deliverables, timelines and budgets, in alignment with Draper business and technical strategies
  • Support business development efforts through ideation, proposal writing, and customer outreach
  • Coordinate, perform or support experiments in Draper's biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) and 3 (BSL-3) laboratories with Draper's advanced in vitro platform technologies (microphysiological system or organs-on-chip)
  • Apply cell biology and tissue engineering fundamentals to develop cell and tissue models and assays within Draper's in vitro tissue culture systems under different contexts of use; work collaboratively with a team and troubleshoot as needed
  • Collect, analyze, organize, and effectively present data to internal management, external customers and sponsors, and for publication
  • Complete all necessary training, adhere to all laboratory, institutional, and government regulations, and contribute to an environment of safety and compliance

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in biology or engineering discipline and several (6+) years of postdoctoral and/or industry experience in a laboratory/R&D setting
  • Expertise writing innovative R&D proposals for government sponsors (contacts, grants) or commercial sponsors and generating intellectual property
  • Expertise developing tissue engineering models, specifically pulmonary, cardiac, liver, gastrointestinal, neural and/or lymphoid tissues, under different contexts of use
  • Expertise in primary mammalian cell and tissue culture, including complex multi-cell type co-cultures, organoid cultures, stem cell or iPSC cultures, and isolating, differentiating and phenotypically and functionally characterizing mammalian cells.
  • Expertise applying fundamental biology knowledge to advanced and novel in vitro cell and tissue culture systems, including microfluidic devices, microphysiological systems (MPS), and/or organ-on-chip (OoC) technologies
  • Expertise with a variety of cell and molecular biology assays and technologies, such as viability assays, immunofluorescence staining, confocal imaging, ELISA/Luminex, flow cytometry, FACS, DNA or RNA extraction, qPCR, and multi-omics (e.g. transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics)
  • Microbiology experience, including experience working with bacterial or viral pathogens or with biological toxins within mammalian cell-based systems; experience studying host-pathogen interactions; experience studying or modeling microbiomes.
  • Some experience with immunology, image processing, synthetic biology, genetic engineering, bioinformatics and data analytics, biostatistical analyses, in silico modeling and/or laboratory automation.
