Position description

The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position in the Fast Sensors R&D group at SCIPP.

As a leading academic facility for R&D in sensor and detection system design, SCIPP has made major contributions to particle detector development. The group's focus is the development of fast sensors for precision timing and high-frame-rate applications in a broad array of fields, including fundamental physics experimentation, accelerator physics, isotope production, and photon and fusion-energy science.

Under the direction of Professor Bruce Schumm, and working in collaboration with SCIPP Fast Sensors group members and its national and international partners, the postdoctoral scholar is expected to play a leading role in the development, characterization, and deployment of advanced solid-state detection systems. Anticipated job activities include:

  • Contributing to the development and testing of innovative timing sensor technologies and high-bandwidth readout strategies.
  • Specification and characterization of analog and digital electronic readout schemes.
  • Making leading contributions to the development of the Time-of-Flight system of the EPiC Detector for the Electron-Ion Collider, including leadership of multi-institutional efforts to develop prototype assemblies.
  • Performing TCAD simulations of advanced sensing and readout schemes in industry-standard packages such as Sentaurus and HFSS.
  • Organizing test-beam campaigns at National Laboratories focused on sensor and detection system characterization and assessment of radiation tolerance.- Organization, oversight and mentoring of undergraduate laboratory assistants and graduate students.

Applicants with expertise in advanced solid-state detection systems and/or similar instrumentation R&D, are encouraged to apply.
