A Brief Overview This role, in conjunction with the Supervisor and Manager, is responsible for the daily shift operation of Central Lab Services. Directs daily workflow including work assignments and scheduling. Ensures that the procedures are performed according to section protocol. Provides leadership and technical expertise in Central Lab Services and performs routine work as workload requires. Is a CHOP ICARE and Service Standard champion.
This role is approximately 80% leadership and 20% bench work.
What you will do
- Leadership Roles and Responsibilities
- Direct, supervise, and evaluate work activities of Central Lab Services staff.
- Establish work schedules and assignments for staff to ensure appropriate shift coverage.
- Enforce all laboratory policies and safety guidelines including evacuation procedures.
- In partnership with the Central Lab Supervisor, handle performance evaluations, personnel disciplinary action, and hiring when required.
- Conduct daily staff huddles.
- Update Central Lab Supervisor with problems or concerns.
- Ensure laboratory is sufficiently stocked with supplies and equipment is in proper working order.
- Actively coordinate with Central Lab Services management for all shifts.
- Provides performance management for staff.
- Quality Assurance
- Act as a primary contact for Care Providers, Laboratory Sections, Client Services, and Couriers.
- Institute computer/tube system downtime procedures and communications.
- Ensure that procedures and methods are performed as defined.
- Provide problem resolution and communication for sample handling, split specimens, specimen retrieval, lost specimens, and specimen requests.
- Ensure equipment maintenance is completed and documented.
- Track and follow up on any unresolved specimen issues.
- Actively initiate and participate in intra- and inter- departmental process improvements
- Training
- Oversee technical, CHOP ICARE and Service Standards, and safety training for new employees.
- Provide employee retraining and documentation for errors.
- Coordinate with departmental leadership to ensure all employees have valid competency documentation.
- Coordinate Central Lab Services training for other departments.
- Provide detailed knowledge of specimen collection, specimen processing, send-outs, and specimen handling to Care Providers and Laboratory Sections.
- Create and update job aids to provide collection, process, and/or handling education for departmental staff as well as Care Providers and Laboratory Sections as needed.
- Processing
- Active in specimen collection and processing specimens for both internal laboratories and send-out reference laboratories.
- Assist Central Lab Services Supervisors in writing and updating procedures.
- Other duties as assigned by Central Lab Services leadership team

- Monday - Friday: 10:00pm-6:30am
Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma / GED Required
- Bachelor's Degree healthcare or related field Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least one (1) year clinical lab experience in a pediatric institution Required
- At least three (3) years clinical laboratory experience Preferred

- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred
