Your Opportunity

Responsible for arranging, current and future, training for individuals or groups within the framework of available programs.Advises employees and management on appropriate training courses. Monitors the progress of attendees.Maintain accurate training records. Manages location training costs and maintains budget control for all training activities.

In addition, this position is also responsible for training and assisting assigned hourly maintenance employees in the development of electrical/mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills as laid out in the plant's In-House Skills Training Program, which includes Computer Base Training (CBT) modules and practical factors as listed on On-the-job (OJT) qualification cards. Will work most time exclusively on training related functions. Works closely with maintenance management to develop tracking documents to best identify areas of needed training. In addition to the primary function as a trainer, will be engaged in the acquisition and retention of all maintenance employees.

Core Responsibilities

Serve as the champion of the In-house Skills Training program which includes but is not limited to the following:

For Operations -

  • Supervise and coach the location specific training staff; schedule hours; vacations; and monitor performance.
  • Manages On the Job Training (OJT) location budget.
  • Guide the OJT location team to train and coach new and existing employees on job-specific topics, work instructions, and SOP (standard operating procedures).
  • Review OJT training and revise the training approach to help improve retention.
  • Leads the communication for the location specific OJT program to plant leadership.
  • Provide feedback to Production Supervisor for progress report to be communicated to employees.
  • Assure all new employees receive necessary training to perform assigned jobs safely and according to position responsibilities.
  • Utilize the training platform to conduct training, track and report the training activity.
  • Maintain the OJT program trainers' competency tracker and the location specific employee skills matrix.
  • Support Manufacturing Excellence (M-IQ), complete tier meeting audits, perform GEMBA walks, where applicable engage in problem solving teams, and maintain M-IQ tenets.
  • Assist in on-boarding of new employees by leading tours and distributing and train on PPE use.
  • Ability to work various shifts and hours. Ability to travel to other facilities.

For Maintenance -

  • Fundamentals training using the Amatrol CBT system in the following areas
    • Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Power Drive Systems, etc.
    • Electrical principles, circuits, motors, motor controls, etc.
    • Electronics including PLCs, VFDs, sensors, etc.
  • Perform OJT and qualification card checkouts
  • Electrical troubleshooting principles.
  • PLC input and output troubleshooting/Sink and Source wiring basics.
  • Serve as the main plant contact for the three apprenticeship programs (Full, Junior, and Sponsored)
  • Establish relationships with local community colleges to attract the most qualified students to work for us part-time during their schooling leading to a full-time job upon graduation.
  • Works with the plant engineer in using RPM to Identify training opportunities.
  • Schedules training time with employees needing additional training.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year College or University and 2 + years of related experience in a production environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience; required.
  • Must be highly skilled in the electrical control systems.
  • Experience acting as a lead by providing training, coaching or mentoring to less experienced staff or through managing a process or project, required.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of communicating and expressing ideas clearly and concisely, in both written and oral formats.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word and Power Point software and ability to research the internet.
  • Ability to train employees in the following job skills:
    • Certified Pallet Jack and Forklift
    • Lock Out/Tag Out (for machines and locks).
    • Fire Safety/Extinguisher
    • Animal Handling
    • Chemical Training
    • Environmental Training
    • Specific Equipment Training based on Manufacturers Guidance
    • Smithfield Policies and Practices
  • Bilingual a plus.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours to cover training across first and second shift.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises Trainers in the Training (Production) department.
  • Ability to evaluate employee performance/techniques.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • The majority of the time is spent in an office setting outside of the production plant. The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently required to sit, use hands to handle, or feel, and talk or hear.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
