Position Highlights

The University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Professional Skills Facilitator. This position provides high-quality support to Professional Skills faculty and students who are enrolled in Professional Skills coursework that occurs throughout the first and second year of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine professional program.

The DVM program is year-round and includes instruction fall, spring, and summer semesters. The Professional Skills Facilitator works collaboratively to develop, design, and implement learning experiences for students, including but not limited to the development of pre-work, in class session materials and simulated client encounters. The Professional Skills Facilitator will assist and empower students to increase skills in communication and relationship-building as future veterinarians. The candidate must possess a strong foundation in teaching and assessment (including grading), instructional technologies (such as D2L and other learning management systems), teamwork and collaboration, and be able to communicate effectively with students, faculty and staff.

Class instruction is primarily in-person with occasional virtual sessions as determined by the course schedule.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Collaborate with Professional Skills team members (faculty and staff) on the development, design, delivery, and implementation of professional skills curriculum year-round.
  • Develop custom instructional materials to support varied learning preferences, including accessibility guidelines for universal design for learning.
  • Provide in-class facilitation on-site at the Oro Valley campus as part of the teaching team to Pre-Clinical (Year 1 and Year 2) veterinary medical students, including whole class and small class discussions with class size of approximately 110 students per cohort.
  • Provide high quality interaction and inspire an open exchange of constructive dialogue with doctoral-level veterinary medical students on topics including, but not limited to, professionalism, communication within the veterinary team, challenging clinical conversations, and how to establish and maintain the veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR).
  • Provide timely, constructive, and consistent feedback and assessment of individual student reflective assignments, primarily post-encounter reflections that are critical to preserving the integrity of the simulated client experience within the Professional Skills curriculum.
  • Review pre-work and other course-associated assignments (e.g., human-animal bond and herd history assignments), and enter grades into the CVM learning management system (VetMed Hub).
  • Maintain the gradebook and check it for accuracy.
  • Assess teaching and learning effectiveness through assorted evaluation methods and provide personalized feedback and support.
  • Create, contribute, and organize pre-work modules and learning events in D2L/Brightspace and VetMed Hub (Elentra) for course session sequencing.
  • Create Zoom sessions and manage technology for both in-class instruction and online classes.
  • Organize student instructional content in VetMed Hub (VMH) and D2L.
  • Identify and implement instructional technologies to augment student learning and engagement.
  • Be present on-site to organize the flow and check-in processes as students arrive to complete their simulated client encounters at the Health Sciences Innovation Building (HSIB) on the main campus of the University of Arizona.
  • Interact with students before and after their simulated events, and provide support as needed.
  • Participate in meetings with the Professional Skills team, CVM Instructional Design team, and all CVM meetings.
  • Communicate in a timely manner with students as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Excellent in-class facilitation skills (large and small groups).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to communicate with a broad range of faculty, staff and veterinary medical doctoral students.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing schedules and in-class sessions.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, particularly related to grading and responding to student inquiries.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff on the Professional Skills team.
  • Ability to work independently to meet deadlines for grading, class materials (pre-work), and other instructional materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience including teaching/instruction/facilitation, grading written assignments, D2L and/or other learning management systems, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
