Development Officer, Major Gifts

The Development Officer plays an integral role partnering with members of the Major Gifts team within the Mass General Development Office to advance the patient care, teaching, research and community health missions of the Mass General Cancer Center. The Officer proactively manages the planning and oversight of administrative and operational activities for the team, troubleshooting and resolving issues independently with an advanced understanding of strategy and projects. This position is also responsible for supporting the planning and production of three signature Cancer Center events and associated volunteer committees, in partnership with Major Gift Officers and the Special Events team.

General Responsibilities
* Anticipate and independently manage all logistics, agendas and other materials for meetings, events, appointments and presentations and troubleshooting issues as needed, taking notes and organizing follow-up actions
* Proactively manage the calendars of assigned individuals, keeping them free of scheduling conflicts
* Produce and review correspondence and other materials, interpreting related background information to advise on content and responses as needed
* Respond to donor, physician and hospital administrators' phone and email inquiries relating to gift-related issues
* Anticipate and independently manage all aspects of business travel arrangements, prepare travel itineraries and troubleshoot and resolve potential conflicts
* Submit employee expenses and vendor invoices
* Conduct prospect identification and research activities, working with Prospect Management and Research colleagues to collect relevant information about donors
* Participate in portfolio review meetings and assist with anticipating donor engagement and stewardship actions
* Gather and record data and action items in a donor database, ensuring thorough documentation of fundraising activity and results
* Complete booking forms for gifts and pledges in a timely manner with thorough backup information, with an advanced understanding of gift types
* As needed, assist with daily operational activities that may include photocopying, scanning, organizing mailings, distributing letters and packages, occasionally hand-delivering (or picking up) materials to locations around the MGH/Mass General Brigham campuses
* Participate in professional development opportunities, including internal volunteer or job shadowing roles when appropriate
* Prepare and regularly update planning documents and progress reports
* Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the face of high work volume and challenging periods
* Assist the team with recruitment activities for vacancies as needed
* Take on other office-wide duties as needed
* Adhere to the mission, credo, and standards of behavior of Mass General
Team-Specific Responsibilities
* Support the Cancer Center's signature fundraising events and associated volunteer committees, including Everyday Amazing Race, CenterStage and the Friends of the Mass General Cancer Center - Duets, including:
oHandle the event invitation list process, following internal best practices to ensure HIPAA compliance
oAssist with sponsorship mailings, track revenue and send post-event invoices and related correspondence
oPartner with the Special Events team to assist with event briefing preparations
* Assist with community fundraising activities, including managing an inventory of branded give-away items; coordinating logistics for check presentations; coordinating faculty and staff participation in events; assisting colleagues and fundraisers with online crowdfunding needs; and attend and participate in select community fundraising events, as needed.
* Prepare regular event fundraising progress reports

This position requires 2-4 years of experience and a college degree. We are looking for someone who has been successful working in a fundraising office or as part of a team in a client-facing or relationship-building role.

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following skills, abilities and attitudes:

  • Organizational, time management and project management skills
  • Command of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook, or the ability to learn them quickly
  • Competency using videoconferencing platforms (Zoom and Teams preferred)
  • Proficiency with data entry or data management in a database (Blackbaud CRM or Raiser's Edge preferred)
  • Attention to detail
  • Professionalism and a strong work ethic
  • Desire and motivation to learn about the organization and fundraising
