THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections, State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Somerset is seeking a highly motivated Chaplain to join our Chaplaincy Department. This role is an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of incarcerated individuals of all faiths and no faith by supporting their overall well-being as part of a team that is committed to creating success, inside and out.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This is professional work providing spiritual and religious guidance to individuals within SCI Somerset as an interfaith chaplain. You will plan and conduct faith-specific religious gatherings and rituals for inmates who share our broad faith tradition as will as facilitate or arrange for comparable accommodations for inmates of other faiths. Your responsibilities will also include conducting spiritual, grief, or special counseling; facilitating structured spiritual discussion groups; making regular visits to inmates housed in general population and specialized units; and make non-routine visits to inmates who have been admitted to community hospitals.

Our team will also rely on you to provide advice to staff on matters related to religious beliefs and practices, participate in recruitment and training for volunteers, and participate in events to promote community understanding of facility religious programs. Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours will be determined at the time of hire.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $58,035.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of professional pastoral experience and a bachelor's degree; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes one year of professional pastoral experience.

Special Requirements:

  • At the time of application, you will be required to provide documentation from an officially sanctioned faith group dated within one year of the application date stating they are officially sanctioned or authorized to conduct worship/sacred services, and specifying which sacraments, rites, ceremonies, or rituals they are authorized to perform as a religious leader.
  • As a Department of Corrections employee, you must complete the Correctional Chaplains Training Course within six months of hire.
  • As a Department of Corrections employee, you must maintain your credentials with an officially sanctioned faith group on an annual basis for the duration of employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
