Position Purpose |
The Outdoor Programs Office is committed to offering transformational outdoor opportunities to students at Dartmouth. We engage them and the local community at a number of educational facilities, including the Ledyard Canoe Club, the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, the Second College Grant, and cabins available for rent throughout the state. In addition.
OPO advises the Dartmouth Outing Club, the largest and oldest college outing club in the country. In partnership with our student leaders, we offer trips, outdoor education seminars, workshops, and courses.
The First Year Trips Coordinator supports Dartmouth's First Year Trips orientation program and the associated student leader training. The position is particularly focused on managing new-student programming and ensuring it serves Dartmouth's educational mission. In addition, the Coordinator manages various aspects of the administrative, logistical, and risk management work necessary to support the First Year Trips program. This role will be temporary until a full-time Program Coordinator is hired, anticipated commitment is April 1 , 2025 - July 31, 2025. |
Required Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree
- 2-3 years experience leading outdoor programs involving camping and extended outdoor stays or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to drive a van under the College Vehicle Policy.
- Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
- Is able to apply sound risk management and problem-solving skills to complex issues in a fast paced, complex environment.
- Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and others
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Competence working with diverse technological platforms, including MS Office & Google Suite products and database management systems; able to quickly adapt to new systems.
- Current Wilderness First Aid certification, or above
- Physical fitness and skills necessary to lead outdoor activities.
- Ability to be on-call during evenings and weekends for emergency management. Frequently available after hours for events, meetings, and programs.

- Experience working in higher education, especially in roles involving student advising.
- Experience overseeing college-level outdoor orientation programs

Program Coordination and Administration (50%)
- Recruits, trains, and manages student employees and student leaders for First-Year Trips
- Works closely with Trip Leader Trainers to design and deliver student leader training content
- Assists First-Year Trips in performing outreach and publicity through media production, social media, print and digital advertising and gathering and stewarding mailing lists.
- Collaborates with the Director of New Student programs on logistical needs and bigger picture partnership on programs for incoming students
- Identifies, evaluates, and coordinates outside resources to provide professional instruction to student leaders; researches, compiles, and develops resources for student leaders.
- Assists with termly risk management reviews; collects and analyses incident data, makes recommendations for corrective action, and coordinates review with Risk Management committee.
- Significant responsibility for ensuring programs are conducted appropriately and within the parameters of complex policy.
- Gathers, analyses, and presents programmatic data for diverse constituents.
Student Advising (30%)
- Builds positive, productive, professional relationships with student leaders.
- Fosters an educational environment for students and staff.
Other General Support (20%)
- Assists in other departmental support functions as needed, including processing financial transactions; inventorying, issuing and cleaning equipment, etc. Revises, updates, and compiles manuals and documents for various club and office functions. Assists in stewardship and distribution of manuals.
- Supports maintenance of Outdoor Programs Office facilities, including partnerships with Facilities Operations and Management, the OPO maintenance team, and outside contractors. Notifies Facilities Operations and Management with appropriately escalated repair-work orders in case of time-sensitive facility maintenance needs.
