Introduction
Undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled in an accredited college course of criminal justice are eligible to apply for the New Haven Police Department's (NHPD) Academic Internship Program.
Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis, and placement depends on department needs, student needs, qualifications and goals, and availability.
Intern placements must be approved by both the student's academic advisor and the New Haven Police Training Academy Commander or Deputy Commander in their absence.
Selected students will be required to sign a basic release regarding background information checks, Ride-Along Waivers, and a confidentiality agreement. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS Student interns are assigned based on area(s) of study, background, and emphasis on department need. Students are strongly urged to have a specific project in mind and approved by their faculty advisor. It should be designed to be completed during the internship.
Students without specific projects or academic requirements,
if accepted, may be rotated through one or more of the internship workstations listed below.
Supervisors in each station may assign specific tasks designed to both assist the department in its daily routine and familiarize the student with the purpose and function of individual police units. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Work Assignments may include:

FINANCIAL CRIMES UNIT -Interns will be exposed to our RMS or OpCenter reporting system. SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT INTELLIGENCE UNIT TRAINING DIVISION -
The New Haven Police Academy is located at 710 Sherman Parkway in New Haven. Its program and faculty are fully certified by the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training (POST} Council. New recruits attend the academy for approximately six months, during which time they are paid the New Haven Police Department's entry level pay for police officers.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE Must be undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in an accredited college course of criminal justice. SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Depending on the program, this internship may be paid or unpaid and for credit / school requirement.
This part time position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent part time positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy*.
Candidates selected for internship will be required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement and a Release of Information in order to perform a background check. The New Haven Police Department will use this background check to verify information provided on the application and other relevant information regarding background and character.
*Pursuant to the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, The City of New Haven has a adopted a Drug Free Workplace Policy. The City of New Haven requires a pre-employment drug test, which includes screening for marijuana.
