Job Description |
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for a full-time, nine-month Nursing Faculty in the Associate of Applied Science (
AAS) in Nursing program beginning the Fall 2025 semester (i.e., August 16, 2025).
Nine-month teaching faculty contracts are from August 16th to May 15th (Fall and Spring semesters); however, pay and benefits are spread over 12 months. The incumbent will have a teaching load of approximately 15 credits per semester, which will include on-campus, in-person classroom instruction and may also include distance-learning courses, on-campus labs, and off-campus clinical experiences during the day and evening, on weekdays and weekends. Instruction may be provided in a classroom, laboratory, and/or clinical setting.
In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise students, serve on college committees, and participate in other activities that support the mission of the college. Such activities may include, but are not limited to: accreditation activities, institutional effectiveness activities, club sponsorship, student recruitment, course and program evaluation, community service, and mentoring new and part-time faculty. Faculty are expected to maintain currency in their teaching disciplines and in trends in community college education.
Candidates selected for an interview will conduct a 15-minute teaching session on a preselected topic. Additional details will be provided when interviews are scheduled.

KSA's/Required Qualifications |
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in Nursing; current Virginia licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN); a minimum of 2 years direct nursing care experience in the clinical area; ability to utilize current classroom technology and experience using Microsoft Office software (e.g., Word, Outlook). Must have the ability to provide student instruction in the classroom, lab, and clinical settings. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certificate, immunization records and medical clearance for patient care. |
Additional Considerations |
Doctorate in Nursing or Doctorate in Education in addition to a
MSN. Educational background specifically in Nursing Education. Certified Nurse Educator (
CNE or
CNE-cl or CNEn). Student-focused with experience teaching Nursing students; demonstrated familiarity with academic advising, student success, and retention efforts in the educational setting. Clinical experience in Pediatrics and/or Obstetrics is desired. Experience using classroom technology (Canvas, Panopto, PowerPoint, etc.) is preferred. Experience providing student instruction in the classroom, lab, and clinical settings. Current nursing experience with nursing program clinical partners. |
