NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range:

$157,100 - $267,000

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an R&D Science and Engineering Manager for the Systems Research, Analysis, & Applications (5522) department, which is within The Complex Systems for National Security Group, as part of the Applied Information Sciences (AIS) Center. Our team focus on the research, development, and application of mathematical and computational methods to analyze, anticipate, predict, and influence the behavior of complex, highly interdependent systems that are critical to our nation's security posture. The methods and capabilities we develop are used to address complicated system and enterprise-level challenges facing numerous national security partners. On behalf of the Laboratories, we lead the coordination and application of key capabilities around Patterns of Life and Information Integrity, responsive to national security demands. We also steward competencies in the areas of optimization, data science, artificial intelligence/machine learning/deep learning, and complex systems modeling and analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for a department of 18 team members.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of managing the department, be an integral part of a cohesive team to develop strategic directions in cooperation with the Center management team, implement that strategy, and collaborate with internal partners and federal sponsors to develop future capabilities.

  • Work closely with staff, fellow managers within the Center, and across the laboratory, external partners, and sponsors to deliver on current commitments, as well as to help shape the research, design and application future of the Department and Group.

  • Engage and manage members of the workforce, including hiring, professional development, performance management, consistent with the mission of the organization.

  • Ensure Department commitments are implemented with management assurance oversight and by handling and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, budgets, schedules, staffing requirements and developing trusted relationships.

  • Foster Information Sciences capability development and engage in program and project management as necessary across portfolios. Engage technically with Department staff and collaborating organizations to understand and represent the Information Science capabilities.

  • Maintain and enhance current internal strategic partnerships with key program areas.

  • Involvement in student engagement/talent acquisition, including evolving MARTIANS.



Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Master's degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, operations research, or other science fields plus four (4) or more years' experience

  • Experience managing multidisciplinary project teams

  • Minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated leadership experience

  • Experience working with a diverse set of internal and external customers

  • Active DOE Q (or equivalent) security clearance and ability to acquire and maintain SCI access, which may require a polygraph



Qualifications We Desire:



  • PhD in engineering, mathematics, computer science, operations research, or other science field

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Ability and enthusiasm to team and collaborate with the 5520 management team and organizations across the Laboratories.

  • Proven track record in shaping new directions and/or capabilities.

  • Demonstrated leadership in Information Sciences.

  • Experience leading virtual/remote employees.

  • Ability to travel on an as needed basis.

  • Ability to handle sparse and sometimes conflicting requirements.

  • Active TS/SCI clearance

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
