Job Overview:The Sacramento Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) aims to improve the financial stability of Sacramento County residents by providing high-quality, one-on-one financial counseling as a public service. FEC counseling services are based on four guiding principles: establishing safe banking relationships, increasing savings, reducing debt, and building credit. The FEC is operated in partnership between the City of Sacramento and the International Rescue Committee. The Sacramento FEC partners with many government and nonprofit social services in the community to help low to moderate income residents address their financial challenges and needs and plan for their futures.

We are seeking Financial Coaches who are empathetic, great motivators, and passionate about helping individuals achieve their financial goals. The Senior Financial Coach position will report directly to the Financial Empowerment Center Program Manager within the Economic Empowerment department.

Major Responsibilities:

Duties shall include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct one-on-one financial counseling sessions to empower individuals to manage their income and achieve financial independence.
  • Document and follow up with counseling sessions to track individual progress and demonstrate program success.
  • Build rapport with clients to cultivate trust and engagement in counseling sessions.
  • Communicate with third parties, including collection agencies, lawyers, and lenders, on behalf of clients to verify or resolve billing or collection errors, disputes, and negotiations.
  • Promote and conduct in-person and virtual outreach workshops and events to obtain new clients and grow financial stability knowledge in the community.
  • Refer clients to community resources to provide additional help as needed.
  • Participate in initial and ongoing professional development trainings.
  • Conduct outreach and storytelling to ensure stakeholders, the community, and the City of Sacramento understand the full scope of work of the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC).
  • Train and mentor new FEC Counselors to support the growth and expansion of the program.
  • Potentially supervise and oversee other financial coaches as the department grows and additional staff are added.
  • Facilitate the integration of the program into the community, including working and coaching clients at various partner offices and community centers.
  • Support with fundraising efforts and grant applications.
  • Successfully complete and pass counselor training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Indirect Reporting:Senior Economic Empowerment Manager, Site Director
Other Internal and/or external contacts:

Internal:IRC program staff, interns and volunteers
External: Community partners and economic empowerment programs.

Job Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college and/or two years of experience of relevant work experience with some background in social service delivery, community engagement/outreach, financial education, or counseling/coaching
  • The ideal candidate has expertise in at least one of the following: social work, financial planning, coaching/mentoring, teaching, financial services, or other related fields

Essential Skills:

  • Ideally bilingual, speaking English as well as Spanish or other common languages spoken by immigrant populations (Farsi, Arabic, Ukrainian, others)
  • Able to become knowledgeable about credit, debt, and money management; savings and investment options and safe financial products and services
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Available to work some evenings and weekends
  • Ability to use a client management database

Working Environment:

This role has a hybrid work environment with a mix of virtual and in-office days. The schedule includes:

  • Virtual Work:Some days will be fully remote, allowing you to work from home.
  • In-Office Work:Certain days will require you to be present in our main office.
  • Variable Office Locations:Occasionally, you may need to work from a partner's office space.

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
