Job Description:

Under general supervision, leads and participates in the work of assigned staff for cleaning and maintaining university properties. Performs relatively simple, semi-skilled duties which include litter picking, trash and debris removal, sweeping sidewalks and courtyards, leaf removal, mulching, mowing, other general landscaping maintenance, uses hand and power equipment tools.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Carries out the complete range of responsibilities associated with the Groundskeeper (entry) role to include: Mows, trims, waters and provides general campus grounds maintenance, as needed. Operates power equipment such as, but not limited to, mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers and leaf blowers. Maintains all assigned planters, residential properties, and CSI green roof. Mulches, plants and installs plant materials such as trees, shrubs, grass and ground cover. Picks up campus litter and empties trash receptacles. Cleans parking garages and parking lots. Performs ice clean up, cleans storm sewers, cleans damage from hail, rain and high wind. Drives trucks to pick up or haul materials, supplies and dirt.

  • Provides guidance to the team on routine maintenance tasks.Coordinates activities for colleagues. Trains new Groundskeepers on the proper techniques for planting, pruning, mowing and weed control. Ensures compliance with safety protocols and the correct use of equipment.

  • Operates, cleans and performs preventive maintenance including greasing, checking and filling fluids on all equipment and vehicles. Occasionally performs general maintenance such as landscape installations, basic constructions and power washing of university property, etc.

  • Keeps various daily work records to include hazardous materials, restricted pesticide usage, fuel consumption, inventory of parts and materials and work orders. Attends meetings and participates in safety trainings.

  • May occasionally assist other landscape services or facilities services departments with tasks of a routine, unspecialized nature (warehouse cleaning, stocking, furniture moving, events set-up, etc.).

  • Cooperates and collaborates with other employees in the spirit of teamwork and collegiality and interacts with confidence, patience and integrity to provide professional leadership during emergencies.

  • Complies with all Trinity University policies and guidelines.

  • Performs other duties as required.

EDUCATION

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Experience above what is minimally required may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • One year of experience as a Groundskeeper

  • Proven experience in landscaping and groundskeeping practices

  • Capable of taking initiative and making independent judgments.

Preferred:

  • Two years of general lawn care experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Ability to read, write and follow written and verbal instructions

  • Exhibits necessary communication skills, verbal and written

  • Portrays excellent attention to detail and exemplary customer service skills and/or willingness to assist and/or work with others

  • Demonstrated regular, reliable, and predictable attendance

  • Must be able to interrelate with fellow employees as needed to get the job done

  • Must treat fellow employees, students, staff and visitors to the University with respect

  • Attention to accuracy in all work

  • Knowledge of plant identification, diseases, pests and appropriate treatment methods

  • Ability to operate and maintain grounds keeping equipment safely

  • May require a valid driver's license and ability to operate a truck or other vehicles

Preferred:

  • Bilingual (Spanish and English)

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License and have a good driving history. May not have more than two moving violations in a three-year period.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • All jobs require a current Criminal Background Check (CBC).

  • Must be able to pass a physical examination.
