Director, Clinical Transplant

The Director, Clinical Transplant is responsible for the direction and leadership of operational, programmatic and personnel activities for the clinical transplant programs (kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, lung and pediatric). This includes establishing, meeting and continuously monitoring the goals and objectives while maintaining alignment with the strategic goals and objectives for VCU Health. While the range of duties and responsibilities are broad and varied, the position's major responsibility is directing the day-to-day operations, quality/regulatory, and human resource management. The Clinical Director works closely with a variety of stakeholders, coordinating activities across the enterprise. Participates as a member of the Organ Donation and Transplant Service Line leadership team, with HLA Laboratory, Transplant Administrative Director, Associate Vice President and Chair of Transplant Services.

Secondary reporting relationship with the CNE/CNO/ACNO to collaboratively maintain current standards of nursing practice as well as nursing policies and procedures. The role coordinates activities and organizational initiatives that enable VCU Health System to be recognized within the healthcare community for excellence in nursing and continued recognition as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Essential Job Statements

  • Responsible for all clinical aspects of the transplant program

  • Provides an experience and environment of patient- and family-centered care.

  • Interprets impact of broad scope organizational change for staff and develops change strategies for successful implementation.

  • Oversees and manages the human resources function for assigned staff. Develops staffing plans; handles the recruitment and selection of qualified candidates; ensures appropriate staff training and development; and evaluates performance.

  • Incorporates VCU Health's vision, missions and values in goals and programs within Transplant.

  • Develops and manages operational initiatives with measurable outcomes.

  • Formulates objectives, goals and strategies collaboratively with other stakeholders.

  • Prepares and delivers reports to senior leadership outlining progress toward meeting annual goals and objectives, to include performance related to finance, clinical activity, quality, safety, marketing, and human resources

  • Guides and directs the development and implementation of a continuous quality improvement plan that supports the mission, goals, and objectives of service line to include compliance with accrediting regulatory agency standards, policies, and procedures as defined by the hospital.

  • Ensures departmental adherence to regulations governing End Stage Renal Disease, Liver Transplantation, and Cardiac Transplantation Medicare certification. Coordinates on-site surveys for continued certification.

  • Identifies educational needs of departments supporting the transplant programs and recommends, provides, and/or facilitates in-service programs to increase awareness of transplant programs, policies, procedures and other pertinent information.

  • Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with physicians, departments, community organizations, and other health care facilities in order to gather and exchange information, develop and implement solutions to problems, and ensure growth and the programs.

  • Manages the complex interdepartmental and interdisciplinary relationships to assure collaboration and effective/efficient operations within Transplant

  • Communicates with physicians, academic department leaders, and senior administrators to maintain coordination with other VCU Health programs.

  • Formulates objectives, goals and strategies collaboratively with other stakeholders.

  • Ensures responsibility and visible commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs/initiatives through collaboration and implementation of initiatives across the health system.

Employment Qualifications

Required Education:

Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field. from an accredited school.

If Master's Degree is not in Nursing, then it is a requirement to have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited school.

Preferred Education:

Master's Degree in Nursing or related field

Licensure/Certification Required: Active registered nursing license in Virginia or reciprocal compact state.

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience:

7 years, including 3 years' management experience

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Has full authority and accountability for actions and decisions within the scope of the position description and hospital policies and procedures.

Demonstrates compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including those related to Medicaid, Medicare, and HIPAA.

All employees of the nursing unit report to this position; however, supervisory responsibilities may be delegated as appropriate.

Cultural Responsiveness:

Specialty certification highly preferred.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

Experience in a large academic or complex health program that included Transplant services

Working Conditions
