Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all
UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the
UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance,
EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support,
HVAC Systems, and Life Safety Services. Housing Support is an effective team of employees providing maintenance and repair services, including a safe and secure environment for the 9000 students living in 37 residence halls and 700 apartments. Trade skills include cabinetmaking, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, electronics, sheet metal, roofing, painting and
HVAC. We identify, estimate, plan and complete minor facility renovation projects via our own Housing Support internal shops, Facilities Services Construction Shops, and/or private contractors. We provide year-round, 24-hour customer service to our resident students and Housing staff. Housing Support also conducts all scheduled facility maintenance inspections within its facilities. This unit is the primary point of contact for the residence halls and dispatches the request to the appropriate shop. |
Position Summary |
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,919 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,459.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,459.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
Installs, repairs, troubleshoots and upgrades electronic and electrical components, including custom manufactured door alarm systems, electronic access control systems, and handicapped doors of various types. Repairs switchgear and checks circuit breakers, busways, load centers, panel boards and connections. Uses appropriate meters to check resistance, amperage, voltages, etc. on any part of secondary electrical systems. Reads and interprets detailed plans, specifications, and diagrams on electrical and electronic projects.
Performs preventive maintenance checks to ensure that equipment is operating at proper specifications. Adjusts/calibrates equipment when necessary. Prioritizes work and completes work orders for preventive maintenance in a timely manner. Disposes of used materials in an appropriate manner. Ensures that shop area and vehicle are clean and organized.
Performs 24-hour emergency callback on a rotating basis in the electrical, electronic and locksmith fields. Maintains professional relationship with other Housing Support and Facilities Services shops, as well as Housing staff. Serves as a mandatory employee and reports to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency events may require the University to close. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Associate's degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Journey level experience in electronic access control systems and electrical installation/repairs; ability to obtain a North Carolina locksmith license within one year of hire.
Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close.
Valid North Carolina Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to start date. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Progressive experience in electronics and industrial/commercial electrical trade; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |

Ability to climb ladders, stand for extended periods of time, navigate stairs and climb ladders, and work in small tight spaces. Ability to bend, stoop and crawl to complete work; move objects weighing up to 50 pounds with out without reasonable accommodation; work in stressful conditions and under critical timelines; and work with small hand tools. |

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.
A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
