HJF is seeking a Life Skills Psychoeducation Group Facilitator to support a research study that will evaluate the effectiveness of a newly developed psychoeducation program aimed at increasing resilience and reducing suicide and other harmful behaviors. The incumbent will administer and oversee in-person and remote skills training group sessions for active-duty military populations.

Project Summary: The Suicide Avoidance Focused Enhanced Group Using Algorithm Risk Detection (SAFEGUARD) initiative will leverage advanced machine learning algorithms to predict suicide risk more accurately and intervene at critical touchpoints and deliver targeted interventions to lower suicide risk. The Life Skills Training program of SAFEGUARD is an educational training program designed to increase resilience and reduce risk of suicidal behaviors. This program involves in-person and remote guided skill training, combined with the use of a mobile app to support homework (skills practice) exercises, as well as remote group booster sessions and personalized messages designed to promote continued skills practice will continue throughout the first year of service.

This position will be in support of the Department of Psychiatry / Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress.

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) is one of the nation's oldest and most highly regarded, academic-based organizations dedicated to advancing trauma-informed knowledge, leadership and methodologies. The Center's work addresses a wide scope of trauma exposure from the consequences of combat, operations other than war, terrorism, natural and humanmade disasters, and public health threats as well as risk and protective factors associated with suicidal behaviors. CSTS is a part of our nation's federal medical school, Uniformed Services University (USU), and its Department of Psychiatry. These affiliations represent the Center's history, mission and future directions as a major contributor to our country's understanding of the impact of trauma and the advancement of trauma-informed care. The Department has active research programs in the Basic and Clinical Sciences and Neurosciences. In addition to intramural research projects, the Department maintains active research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Science Foundation, the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force. The department has ongoing collaborations with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, is sponsor of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress and provides psychiatry residency training through its affiliations with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center and Malcolm Grow Air Force Medical Center and the National Capital Area Graduate Medical Education Consortium.

Responsibilities

  • Administer life skills training group sessions, live in-person workshops, and remote Zoom groups with high fidelity, including all components of the study protocol (e.g. consenting participants, administering brief assessment measures, etc.)
  • Supervise, oversee, and assist in training group facilitators that are responsible for delivering educational training program components
  • Coordinate group training schedules and refine training materials as needed
  • Oversee and evaluate work activities of group facilitators and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Provide feedback (including corrective feedback) to group facilitators on skills training delivery/fidelity and monitor whether feedback is incorporated.
  • Lead regular meetings (at least weekly) with group facilitators for updates and to provide mentorship and guidance (and be available as needed 1:1 between regularly scheduled meetings)
  • Meet regularly with the research and programmatic team to provide study updates/summaries (e.g. workshop/session attendance, study progress, etc.) and to receive consultation on intervention delivery and other feedback or input regarding the study.
  • Modify intervention content/materials as needed, in coordination with and in response to feedback from team leadership.
  • Assist with scheduling and coordination of live workshop delivery and Zoom group sessions
  • Promptly report to on-site clinical leadership regarding any emergent participant safety issues.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by supervisor.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree required in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health or related fields. Doctoral Degree preferred in Social Work, Psychology, or Public Health or related fields.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of mental health and/or related scientific areas
  • Experience in a leadership/mentorship role for trainees, fellows, or students in psychology, social work, or a related discipline
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing, identify and resolve problems, and deliver feedback
  • Strong management/organizational and problem-solving skills to lead small teams of interventionists
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Experience writing manuscripts for publication in professional journals or books, writing scientific grant protocols, and writing and presenting papers at professional meetings and conferences.
  • Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate activities to meet deadlines
  • Experience presenting to large groups of people
  • Prior experience leading psychoeducational workshops or groups (and/or teaching relevant courses) in behavioral science or health-related field strongly preferred
  • Prior experience working with military populations or within the military health system strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to be a team player, flexible-minded, willing to take the initiative, assertive, and multi-task with different projects
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting and will be hybrid in Fort Cavazos, TX.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$120,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
