Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's postgraduate fellowship programs provide a structured clinical and professional education to foster growth.

The Psychiatry and Mental Health Advanced Practice Provider (APP) fellowship is an innovative one-year training program that teaches APP fellows to become highly skilled in the multidisciplinary, collaborative, and evidence-based management of complex and challenging patients in psychiatry.

The curriculum is composed of in-person didactics, online classrooms, and mentored clinical rotations.

Fellows will have rotations in a variety of ambulatory settings, inpatient settings, and elective rotations in specialized ambulatory settings providing health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CSG policies and procedures.

The APP fellow will have a strong foundation in evidence-based practice and ensure an environment of safe, quality care.

  • New graduate or currently in school - recommend at least 1 letter from program leadership.

Organizational Structure

The Medical College Physician's APP Psychiatry and Mental Health is an innovative one-year training program that teaches APP fellows to become highly skilled in the multidisciplinary, collaborative, and evidence-based management of complex patient care.

The curriculum comprises in-person didactics, online classrooms, simulation, proctored procedures, and mentored clinical rotations.

During the program, fellows will have rotations in a variety of ambulatory settings, an inpatient setting, and elective rotations in specialized ambulatory settings.

Psychiatry and Mental Health Fellowship Specific Responsibilities

  1. Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring psychiatric intervention in a blended environment as a member of the mental health team.
  2. Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  3. Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  4. Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the psychiatry services.
  5. Facilitates and communicates with patient, family, and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  6. Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  7. Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  8. Acquires information on the most current developments and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  9. APP fellows must meet and maintain the expectations outlined in the APP fellowship handbook.

Successful completion of the APP fellowship program requires meeting all requirements outlined in APP fellowship handbook within the 12-month duration of the program. Upon meeting all program requirements, APP fellows earn a certificate of completion.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  1. Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  2. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  3. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  4. Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  5. Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  6. Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  7. Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  8. Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  9. Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Compensation and Benefits

APP fellows receive compensation during the program. Bimonthly paychecks start after the completion of the first month of employment. The MCW fellow stipend is $*** and paid out over 12 months. (may vary by program) Taxes and deductions apply.

Position Requirements:

Preferred Experience: Background in mental health is preferred but not required.

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Wisconsin Physician Assistant License

Wisconsin RN License Certification by NCCPA

Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License Eligible for DEA

Certification as Advance Practice Nurse Acceptable criminal background check

Certification as psychiatric NP preferred. AHA BLS

Will consider certification as Family Practice NP and/or Geriatric NP

Eligible for DEA licensure
