Position Summary

The Youth Development Coordinator is an administrative and supervisory support position to the Youth Development Manager & Director. Youth Development Coordinators must have proven ability and desire to work with children, parents, volunteers, and peers. YD Coordinators supervise camp staff positions, oversee Day Camp program areas, and lead activities for Day Camp events as needed. YD Coordinators ensure the safety and well-being of all campers while they are in their care. YD Coordinators are expected to lead by example, create a welcoming environment for all, facilitate coaching and training of staff, assist with the hiring process, & facilitate relationship building amongst staff, parents, and children.

Essential Functions



  • Know, explain, and exemplify mission, purpose, and values of the Kroc Center and the Salvation Army.
  • Delegate, coach, & instruct Day Camp staff to lead Day Camp and other recreation activities with enthusiasm according to training protocol.
  • Adhere to and implement discipline procedures created for campers and staff
  • Complete "Report to Parents" forms to inform parents, Day Camp Director, and other Day Camp Coordinators of issues, such as camper injuries, disputes, and behavioral problems
  • Coordinate any camper, parent, staff, or volunteer issues with other Day Camp Coordinators and to Day Camp Manager in timely manner; follow up with appropriate documentation as directed.
  • Always adhere to dress code by wearing assigned Day Camp Coordinator polo shirt and name tag
  • Maintain an accurate group schedule for each camper group, including Day Camp Counselors that assigned to each specific group; ensure accurate group head-count of registered campers at all times
  • Oversee and facilitate Day Camp sign-in/sign-out procedures according to protocol; check ID of each person signing out a camper, and ensure all participant documents are properly distributed to parents and/ or other authorized individuals
  • Communicate respectfully and with a positive tone with peers, employees, supervisors, and customers of various socio-economic backgrounds; handle disputes with participants, parents and staff in a professional manner with guidance from the Youth Development Director & Manager, and act as a first point-of-contact in handling customer-service issues
  • Enforce facility- and activity-specific regulations to ensure safety; ensure that only registered campers participate
  • Provide information and answer questions regarding available Day Camp programs
  • Maintain safe working environment; report and all facility defects/problems and any suspicious activities or persons to the Youth Development Manager & Director
  • Perform point-of-scale operations, cash handling, and CCMS database management for all Day Camp programs
  • Assist in emergencies and treatment of injured participants, volunteers, and/or staff; follow up by completing appropriate paperwork as directed
  • Assist Youth Development Director & Manager with planning and instruction for annual Day Camp Staff Training Seminar
  • Develop, monitor, and ensure implementation of participant behavior contracts as needed; ensure appropriate communication and completion of all documentation
  • Supervise Day Camp Counselors and Junior Leaders & hold staff accountable for their responsibilities and actions while at camp.
  • Maintain a positive and professional relationship with everyone. Build a positive culture of coaching & accountability.
  • Create all camp group schedules
  • Complete all assigned tasks in a timely and orderly manner.
  • Recognize spiritual need of individuals, which may require referral to the officer/pastor
  • Maintain and distribute participants' personal medications; maintain medication logbook according to established procedures
  • Assist Youth Development Director & Manager with hiring: intake of candidates, pre-screen calls, interviewing, reference checks, and following paperwork collection.
  • Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures and the Day Camp Code of Conduct


Working Conditions

Ability to walk, swim, skate, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift up-to 50lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinets drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer and telephone.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Minimum High School graduate or equivalent; college degree preferred.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certifications required on first day of work
  • Minimum 20 years of age
  • Minimum two years of experience working with children, preferably in Day Camp environment.
  • Must maintain a valid California Driver's License
  • Must successfully complete Decision Driving Safety Test before driving for The Salvation Army and annually recertify as required
  • Must meet certification by and participation in The Salvation Army's Fleet Safety Program (Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy dictates that an employee may not obtain more than two [2] moving violations or accidents within any 12-month period; see The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy)


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Must work well and relate well with people
  • Must attend staff, child safety, and other trainings as directed
  • Must have a philosophy of education and child development consistent with that of The Salvation Army Kroc Center
  • Must be capable of learning basic point -of-scale procedures
  • Must be able to work well with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling, and education including but not limited to
  • Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages
  • Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently
  • Ability to handle security and crisis situations calmly
  • Ability to provide constant and continual supervision
  • Ability to engage and maintain a child's interest in activities
  • Previous experience with point-of-scale or computerized sales systems
  • Requires use of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint helpful
  • Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use software programs with basic training
