About the Position:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Fitness, the Coordinator of Fitness supports Mason Recreation and the University's Strategic Plan by assisting the Assistant Director of Fitness in managing the fitness operations and programs in 3 facilities (the Aquatic and Fitness Center, Recreation Athletic Complex, and Skyline), supporting wellness and well-being programming, and providing a safe environment for fitness related activities. The Coordinator of Fitness assists the Assistant Director of Fitness with the scheduling for approximately 60 Fitness Attendants (floor staff), over 40 Fitness Instructors, and approximately 15 Personal Trainers. The Coordinator of Fitness also assists with the program and financial management, administration and planning, and facility management of the entire fitness program.

Responsibilities:

Personnel Management



  • Develops and implements an approved staffing plan for assigned staff which may include Fitness Attendants, Group Exercise, Personal Trainers, and Equipment Technicians;
  • Develops and implements an approved staffing plan for Fitness Program Assistants. Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff in accordance with Department and University guidelines;
  • Assimilates and disseminates a comprehensive body of information to employed staff to ensure effective team functioning, employee development and achievement of performance standards; and
  • Assists with personnel management as needed and requested by supervisor.


Program and Financial Management



  • Supports the Assistant Director of Fitness in the management of the fitness floor and maintenance, group exercise, personal training and fitness programing. Creates and maintains schedules for fitness programing;
  • Covers shifts in the absence of student wage and wage employees in order to ensure fitness programs are staffed and classes are not cancelled;
  • Develops program marketing and policies and procedures related to all assigned programming;
  • Establishes criteria for creating new programs, workshops, and special events in keeping with student, faculty, staff and community interests and current trends;
  • Maintains a wide variety of program choices to meet the needs of a diverse University community;
  • Assists with the coordination of research, assessment and program/service evaluation for fitness programs and services;
  • Develops evaluation tools to assess individual programs and provide regular feedback to staff;
  • Facilitates marketing and instructs preparation courses for fitness programs;
  • Collaborates with other campus groups to enhance the educational, fitness, and leadership opportunities to contribute to the well-being of the George Mason University community;
  • Assists with the preparation and monitoring of the annual Fitness budgets for the Recreation Department fitness areas, fitness programs, events, and staffing under their supervision;
  • Assists with the production of monthly reports to ensure adequate controls and efficient use of financial resources; and
  • Assists with the preparation and analyzing of daily reports, participation statistics, payroll, inventory, and all financial transactions maintaining accountability.


Administration and Planning



  • Assists with assessment as it relates to fitness and well-being;
  • Composes, compiles, and presents reports including an annual report summarizing the accomplishments and challenges in fitness;
  • Responsible for the lead role in risk management of the fitness related staff, programs, facilities, and equipment;
  • Trains staff in risk management and emergency procedures;
  • Tracks staff certifications related to specific position requirements as well as CPR/AED and First Aid; and
  • Serves as fitness representative on the departmental risk management committee.


Facility Management



  • Provides and maintains a safe and secure fitness environment for customers and staff at all Recreation Department facilities;
  • Provides first aid as needed/in emergency situations;
  • Assists with the development and implementation of customer service policies, systems, and training programs that provide for pleasant, timely, and knowledgeable service;
  • Implements policies and procedures according to Department expectations and timelines;
  • Assists with the purchase of equipment; reviews specifications, prepares requisitions and confirms accuracy of invoices;
  • Serves as liaison to vendors and contractors;
  • Assists with moving and basic repairs of equipment; and
  • Communicates effectively with facilities staff regarding adequate fitness floor staffing and express any facility needs.


Professional Development and Other Duties



  • Continues to develop professionally through membership and participation in applicable professional organizations and developmental workshops;
  • Actively participates in the educational process of George Mason University students, faculty, and staff through their interaction with our programs and services;
  • Serves on Campus Committees as requested in cooperation with campus related initiatives;
  • Provides students and staff with opportunities for professional development through various organizations, workshops, and clinics; and
  • Assists with other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience typically obtained in 1+ years in a recreation or fitness setting;
  • Demonstrated knowledge related to recreational programming and rules and policies;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and be able to provide feedback while also implementing suggestions from feedback they have received;
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well to diverse individuals and demonstrate the ability to manage a large staff; effectively train, supervise, and motivate student leaders for the fitness program; provide leadership and guidance to a diverse program; foster a positive work environment and encourage collaboration and teamwork;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage budgets;
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and perform equipment set-ups for various recreational activities;
  • Demonstrated commitment to making an active and meaningful contribution to the university's well-being initiative is necessary; and
  • American Red Cross AED, CPR and First Aid certification; or the ability to obtain such certification within six months of employment.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in related field;
  • American Red Cross AED, CPR and First Aid instructor certification; and
  • One or more professional fitness certifications accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) such as NASM, NSCA, ACE, ACSM, AFAA; or the ability to obtain such certification within six months of employment.
