Senior Research Technician Requisition ID: 2024-8675 # of Openings: 1 Location: US-UT-Logan Category: Research (non-Faculty) Position Type: Benefited Full-Time Job Classification: Non-Exempt College: College of Engineering Department: Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Advertised Salary: Commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits Overview The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a Research Technician who is a versatile machinist and design specialist and will perform technical procedures in a teaching and/or research laboratory and/or perform field research under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. This individual will bring strong machining expertise while actively contributing to the broader design and implementation of experimental setups for cutting edge research and for student capstone projects. The ideal candidate will collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students, offering technical guidance from concept development through final assembly and testing. The start date for this position can be as early as January 15, 2025. Responsibilities The Research Technician assists instructors and researchers by performing lab tests, collecting data, setting up, operating, and maintaining equipment, maintaining various records of department equipment and facilities. The Research Technician also helps prepare work schedules, conduct lab meetings, ensure federal and state compliance standards, oversee lab work, and recruit, train and oversee student lab technicians. **Document size may not exceed 10 MB.** Advertised Salary Commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits ADA This position requires onsite work of 8 hours per workday and moderate physical activity, including the handling of estimated weight objects up to 60 pounds and/or standing or walking more than four hours per day. Employees are exposed to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Use of ladders may be required. The work environment may involve exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. University Highlights The MAE department has experienced significant growth over the past decade, with enrollments of approximately 800 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, and is the largest department in the College of Engineering. The department offers MS and PhD degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The department currently has 18 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 5 professors of practice, with additional part-time instructors from local industry and research institutions. Faculty research areas include fluid dynamics, combustion and propulsion, flight mechanics, space dynamics, advanced materials, controls, and systems engineering with research expenditures in recent years about $3M. Successful applicants may have opportunities to work closely with scientists and engineers from the USU Research Foundation Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), one of 14 Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARC). Further, USU faculty also have access to the University of Utah Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) facilities and the Utah Water Lab.
