Job Summary

Under general direction of the Vineyard Manager, responsible for day-to-day operation and maintenance of the vineyard crops unit which currently includes a combined 138.3 acres of vineyards and potential vineyard blocks at the RMI, Hopkins, Tyree and Oakville Station. This position interacts and communicates with supervisors, faculty, researchers and the local community to meet the multiple research, extension, and educational goals of the Department of Viticulture and Enology. The Ag Supervisor is a working supervisor and is expected to participate in team meetings, share ideas and resources, supervise, coordinate, and plan work assignments and priorities and manage staff, and perform all activities in the operation of a large, complex research and teaching facility. Manages major and minor farm equipment, vehicles, building and shop maintenance. Ensure equipment, manpower and supplies are available to accomplish workload requirements and meet established goals and deadlines. Provide overall supervision and participate in activities to maintain crop production for research and other experimental purposes. Supervise and train personnel in the operation of farm equipment and application of pesticides and fertilizers in a safe and effective manner. Supervise and participate in the maintenance of field facility including rolling inventory, post-harvest processing equipment, buildings and fences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Position requires a California Pesticide Applicator Certificate and Forklift Safety Certificate (or ability to obtain one within six months of employment).
  • High school diploma or equivalent certification / experience / training
  • Experience overseeing and managing vineyards, including irrigation methods and control systems, vineyard maintenance of vines, vine removal and planting, and identifying, diagnosing, resolving vineyard nutrition, pest and disease issues, and experience with rootstock propagation, bench-grafting, field budding, grafting, rootstocks, cultivation, cover crops, and grading, and harvesting of grapes, including management of harvest crews and operation of equipment, including forklifts, farm and industrial tractors, and vineyard-related equipment, including recognizing, diagnosing, and repairing equipment malfunctions.
  • Experience with implementing and complying with vineyard procedures and federal and state pesticide-related regulations, including vineyard and chemical safety, and experience with instructing others in safety procedures and ensuring adherence to safety codes, policies, and practices.
  • Experience managing, supervising, and training technical staff and organizational skills to recruit and develop staff performance, arrange job assignments according to importance, assign responsibilities, arrange for equipment, labor and field supplies, and ensure jobs are completed and meet required deadlines.
  • Communication skills to interact effectively and collegially with diverse groups of supervisors, faculty, staff, students, casual labor, the local community, and the general public both in person and by phone, text messaging, email, or other communication devices.
  • Skills to work with frequent interruptions, under pressure of time constraints and workload and to train others in the use of fundamental and specialized equipment and schedule and advise the importance assigned to each piece of equipment as well as conveying the importance of each task performed and its completion date and skill to calibrate, operate, and train staff in use of all types of fertilizer and pesticide application equipment, spreaders, and chemigation equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with viticultural research and managing budgets and contracts for crop/grape sales and with online purchasing programs to order supplies and equipment and to speak Spanish and English.

Work Environment

Position requires a valid C driver's license and is required to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles Pull Notice System. Subject to medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Must participate in medical monitors programs, including cholinesterase testing, preventative medical programs, including medical surveillance, and physical examinations as required by mandated programs. Subject to and/or UC safety officer in Injury Illness Protection program, workers protection standards, pesticide safety training and biohazard training. Work in extremely hot/cold outdoor temperatures along with dusty and unpleasant conditions. While applying pesticides wear required personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, ear protection, protective clothing, gloves, etc. Work flexible schedule to respond to emergency needs, to resolve problems, to apply pesticides outside normal working hours and to ensure project deadlines are met.
