POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the supervisor, provide oral medical interpretation for clinical and non-clinical encounters in verbal and written form in compliance with the IMIA Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics and BMC policies to ensure patient safety and access to quality care. The Interpreter II (Multi-lingual) interprets in at least two or more target languages and/or dialects. Translates from English into target languages and back, to allow communication between LES (Limited English Speaking) patients and hospital staff. Assists patients filling out forms, interpreting medical instructions, medication schedules and instructions. Provides administrative written translations such as letters to patients, documents, and patient materials. Tracks and documents encounters for reporting purposes.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Minimum of 2 years of college (or equivalent combination of formal education and experience).

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

A certificate of completion of a Medical Interpreting program offered at a college level.

EXPERIENCE:

At least 1 year previous work experience where interpreting was a primary function of the job. Interpreter in a healthcare setting preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


  • Requires demonstrated proficiency (both oral and written) in English and the target languages to be worked in. (Determined by an entry test provided by Interpreter Services).
  • Strong knowledge of medical vocabulary.
  • Must be familiar with and able to perform in all modes of interpretation and have knowledge and understanding of the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics.
  • High level of customer service and a positive approach.
  • Experience working with patients with diversity of cultural/socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of computer systems such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
