Description

The Transportation and Parking Department at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a PRT Purchasing & Inventory Technician.

About the Opportunity:

This position provides inventory and purchasing support for the WVU-PRT. The incumbent initiates the purchase of materials and goods, uses purchase orders, and receives and delivers inventory. The incumbent uses a P-card for weekly consumable goods purchases. This position is also responsible for storing and maintaining the warehouse parts and supplies inventory.

What you'll do:



  • Fills orders and issues materials and tolls per requests. These transactions are debited using an existing card catalog system and entered into a new computer-based inventory management system. Use a sign out log for secure area keys, fleet fuel credit cards, radios, tools, and equipment used daily but not kept on the inventory management system.
  • Performs shipping and receiving duties within the warehouse. Processes and completes all associated paperwork and files partial and completed orders correctly. Counts, weighs, or measures incoming or outgoing items to compare identifying information against bills of lading, invoices, or other records. Examines each shipment for damage or shortage and places the items in proper locations.
  • Participates in finding price and availability of essential supplies and materials and purchases them with a P-card. Drives state vehicles to pick up local orders or purchase in person. Care must be taken to honor state contracts and make sure bills are correct and sales tax free.
  • Receives worn out or broken items and surpluses ones which are not repairable. Arranges shipping of repairable items or other departmental packages by determining method of shipment; then weighs, packs, ships, and documents all transactions. Receives small amounts of hazardous waste (such as PCB items), packs and labels them, contracts proper department for disposal, and completes all necessary paperwork.
  • Provides on-the-job training to newer employees utilizing knowledge of shipping, receiving, and stock operations.
  • Cleans and organizes immediate work area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED. Equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in the following:

    • Handling specific goods or materials in stock
    • Knowledge of basic buying & purchasing practices
    • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts.
    • Knowledge of inventory principles and practices
    • Knowledge of Postal Regulations.




Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Ability to learn basic buying and purchasing practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of warehousing and inventory control theory and application.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations applicable to the storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of computer applications, including spreadsheets, database management systems, and computerized inventory control systems.
  • Knowledge of state procurement policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Must possess bookkeeping and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to learn postal regulations.
  • Ability to learn inventory principles and practices.


Physical Demands:



  • This position is frequently located in a warehouse environment and may be required to lift and/or carry heavy items, usually weighing between 50-75 lbs., occasionally lifting objects over 75 lbs. Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, or climb and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) and have the skill and accuracy of hand/eye coordination to operate warehouse machinery, such as conveyor belts and forklifts.

  • P-Card Certification (must acquire within 30 days of hire.
