We are currently accepting applications for one (1) full-time (40 hrs/wk) position:

Mechanic
Department of Public Works

Complete Hourly Range: $26.52
with excellent health, dental and leave benefits

The REQUIRED Town of Lexington application form must be received in the Town's Human
Resource Department. This position will remain open until filled.

Scope of Work

This position performs skilled and manual tasks in the servicing, mechanical repair and maintenance of
equipment and vehicles for various Town departments and the school district.

Received Crew Leader and/or Superintendent

Essential Job Functions

* Inspects, diagnoses and performs mechanical repairs of vehicles, equipment and apparatus for various
departments and agencies, including the Department of Public Works, the Fire Department and the local
school district; maintains and services a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
* Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic systems, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, engines,
transmissions and other components of vehicles and equipment (e.g., generators, distributors, relays,
lights, switches, etc.); repairs, adjusts and replaces brake systems including wheel cylinders, master
cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors.
* Performs tune-ups to vehicles and equipment; performs tire repairs and road service repairs on vehicles
and equipment; repairs air conditioning systems; performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and
equipment; checks and replaces fluids on scheduled basis and as needed.
* Inspects and tests equipment repairs to monitor proper functioning; compares repairs and service
completed with documented customer work order information to ensure complete, responsive service.

* Designs and fabricates parts, equipment, and other apparatus as necessary; operates welding equipment
and welds parts and equipment.
* Prepares snow removal equipment for use and repairs equipment as required.
* Conducts body repair work on some vehicles and equipment; paints vehicles and equipment as needed.
* Operates assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner, according to established policies and
procedures.
* Follows safe work practices.

Requirements of Work
Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent) plus additional technical or specialized training,
supplemented at least 4 years of automotive mechanical repair work preferred; or any equivalent combination
of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:
Knowledge of * Operations, services and activities of a vehicle and equipment services shop.
* Methods and techniques of diagnosing, repairing and maintaining equipment and
vehicles.
* Complex systems and components of equipment and vehicles, including engine
systems, electrical functions, cooling systems, carburetor systems, etc.
* Parts, fluids and tools used in mechanical repair and servicing of vehicles and
equipment.
* Methods and techniques for lubricating vehicle and equipment parts.
* Various types of welding equipment, including electric and arc.
* Shop safety procedures and practices.
* Computer applications and current technology related to essential job functions.
* Applicable rules, regulations, codes, ordinances and safety standards that govern the
performance of the duties being performed.
* Occupational hazards and the methods and techniques used to avoid or minimize
risks.
Ability to * Communicate clearly and concisely.
* Understand and follow instructions.
* Work independently with minimal supervision.
* Diagnose operating malfunctions and make all necessary repairs.
* Operate vehicles, tools and equipment relevant to assigned operations.
* Keep records and make reports.
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers,
and the general public.
Skill in * Performing mechanical repairs and maintenance work.
* Journeyman level skills in welding, gas and diesel engine repair.
* The operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the performance of the
essential job functions.
* Oral and written communications.
* Identifying and preventing work hazards.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license; Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement;
Massachusetts Class 2B Hoisting License

* Work is performed both indoors and outside; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate tools,

* The employee may frequently be exposed to adverse weather and other unpleasant conditions
such as heat, cold, wetness and humidity; dim or bright lights, dust, odors, noise, vibrations, toxic
agents, asbestos, lead paint, electrical currents, heavy machinery; and occasionally violence, smoke
and disease.
* The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to and in excess of 50 pounds.
