Job Summary

The Coordinator is responsible for providing a supervised and structured environment for students assigned to the in-school suspension program within Alexandria City High School-Chance for Change. This position works with administrative staff and classroom teachers to coordinate the academic activities of assigned students, instructs students on replacement behaviors, and provides assistance to students in completing the assigned work.

Qualifications:



  • Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or eligibility to obtain one.



Essential Duties



  1. Promotes adherence to established rules and regulations of the in-school suspension program and creates an effective climate for learning.
  2. Serves as a liaison between the administrative staff, classroom teacher, and students assigned to the program to obtain and return the student's daily class work and homework.
  3. Assists students assigned to the program with completing their regular classroom assignments.
  4. Instructs students on replacement behaviors through the use of the social skills curriculum and restorative practices.
  5. Communicates appropriate behavior, school rules, and regulations to students in the program.
  6. Communicates with students the reasons for their ISS assignment and allows students to reflect on their behaviors and its impact on their education.
  7. Instructs, guide, and encourage students to develop a positive attitude toward learning.
  8. Monitors students who have been assigned to in-school suspension and reviews student progress.
  9. Develop and implement a data collection protocol to include but not limited; to student monitoring and progress monitoring of grades and behavior
  10. Communicates with parents and classroom teachers regarding student behavior and progress.
  11. Reports inappropriate behavior by students to professional staff members.
  12. Reports the effectiveness of the program to administrative staff and makes suggestions for improvement.
  13. Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Practices preferred


Clearances:



  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.


Public Health Compliance



  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
