Job Summary

To maintain and improve the buildings, equipment, and grounds of the Cleveland Institute of Music in a manner compatible with institutional objectives as well as in compliance with local, state, and federal codes as applicable. This position reports to the Director of Facilities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled maintenance work for CIM properties as needed:
    1. Carpentry
    2. Drywall
    3. Plumbing
    4. Electrical
    5. Painting
    6. Furniture Repair
    7. Cylindrical, Mortise, and Electronic Locks
    8. Door Closer Systems and Related Hardware
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of hand and power tools as well as general construction safety practices.
  • Perform regular surveillance of the CIM buildings and grounds identifying and evaluating risks that involve students, residents, employees, and property and following through accordingly with appropriate repairs.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Director and Assistant Director of Facilities using email and other team management software.
  • Set maintenance assignment priorities in accordance with guidelines and in collaboration with Director and Assistant Director of Facilities.
  • Assist with servicing of Boilers, maintenance of HVAC system and fire alarm systems.
  • Set up and strike equipment, furniture, and other equipment for events.
  • Provide routine preventive and predictive maintenance and repair of buildings, structures, and utility distribution systems.
  • Participate in expanding and supporting predictive and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the grounds, such as snow removal and landscaping duties as needed.
  • Provide maintenance and cleanliness of CIM owned vehicles.
  • Provide safe transportation of faculty, staff, students, and patrons as directed.
  • Work emergency call-ins and overtime as needed.
  • Follow projects and requests through to completion.
  • Dispose of waste and recyclables in an appropriate manner.
  • Maintains maintenance areas, equipment, and work areas in a clean safe manner.
  • Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in building maintenance and/or a related skilled trade preferred.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of hot water heating systems and equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning repairs.
  • Able to diagnose and report mechanical and/or other problems by listening to, observing equipment, and taking appropriate action as needed.
  • Must maintain a valid and unexpired driver license.

  • Dependable with an excellent attendance record.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Physical dexterity required for lifting, moving, standing, or walking for significant periods of time.
  • Physically able to climb/crawl in tight areas, climb ladders, etc.
  • Able to lift 75 pounds.
  • On call for emergencies
  • Position schedule available 14:30-23:00, Tuesday-Saturday


Tuesday - Saturday 2:30 pm - 11:00 pm (2nd shift)
