Organizational Unit Overview
The School Theatre and Dance ( https://theatredance.ecu.edu/) is housed in the College of Fine Arts and Communication and enrolls approximately 250 undergraduate students. The school provides rigorous, conservatory-style training within a liberal arts setting. Students are taught and mentored by a faculty of over 25 active professionals, who work to prepare them intellectually, artistically, and practically, to be leaders in their chosen profession. East Carolina University has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre ( NAST) since 2012.
The school offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Dance and Theatre Arts and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts. The BFA Dance is a triple-track program in ballet, jazz, and modern that equally focuses on choreography and performance. Students in the BFA Theatre Arts choose between acting, educational theatre, entertainment design and production, musical theatre, stage management, and theatre for young audiences.
The School of Theatre and Dance is home to the Loessin Playhouse, which offers numerous productions each season including dance performances, musicals, and plays. The Lossein Playhouse offers professional-quality stage productions for the university and region. Productions are housed in McGinnis Theatre and the Archie Burnette Studio Theatre. Under the direction of School of Theatre and Dance faculty and staff, students perform, produce, and design these productions.
East Carolina University is one of the largest of the state's 16 degree-granting public institutions within the University of North Carolina system. The University is in the city Greenville, North Carolina, on the Tar River, a community of over 90,000. Greenville serves as a cultural center in eastern North Carolina. Outdoor amenities include access to the Tar River for boating and kayaking, the expansive River Park North, a greenway system, and beyond. ECU is located adjacent to the city's historic downtown. Restaurants, coffee shops, brew pubs, retail businesses, and art galleries comprise this thriving district, which regularly hosts community events.
Job Duties
The Director of the School of Theatre and Dance is the chief administrative officer and unit head of the School of Theatre and Dance and is responsible to and serves at the pleasure of the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication. The Director of the School is the producer and artistic director, in accordance with professional theatre norms, of all production work by the school and the Loessin Playhouse.
The director of the School of Theatre and Dance will:
*Oversee all personnel matters including hiring, evaluation, tenure, promotion, and advancement.
*Assign teaching loads and classes for faculty and staff.
*Assign faculty responsibilities for all productions within the school.
*Manage and administer all budgets for the school, including state, foundation, and other accounts.
*Lead fundraising and community outreach, alumni outreach, and engagement with professional organizations.
*Oversee and ensure proper maintenance and use of school spaces, facilities, equipment, and technology in Messick Theatre Arts Center, McGinnis Theatre, and beyond.
*Manage and oversee student recruiting and success initiatives.
*Ensure compliance with the school's Unit Code of Operation, East Carolina University, and UNC System policies and procedures.
*Prepare annual reporting documents and ensure implementation of the school's strategic plan.
*Contribute to the scholarly and artistic mission of the school.
*Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education/Experience
An MFA, or equivalent terminal degree in theatre or dance from an accredited institution.
Strong record of producing theatrical and/or dance productions as artistic director or co-director.
*Leadership experience at the university level in theatre and/or dance as director, department head/chair or area coordinator.
*Research and/or creative activity, teaching, and service record commensurate with requirements for tenure at the academic rank of Associate Professor in the School of Theatre and Dance.
*Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with faculty, staff, students, administrators, and the community.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Well-rounded background in production field, demonstrating diverse experiences that spans managing both on-stage performances and behind the scenes operation.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
